Cabernet Sauvignons
- Lail - - Quintessa - - Opus One -
|
Hello to All Those Who Imbibe,
It's hot outside, so I thought it's time to tell you about all the hot 2007 Cabernets coming into the store. As many of you know, September and October are the BIG release dates for California Cabernet. My favorite wines of the year just arrived this week.
|
2007 Lail Cab $129 each or 3+ $115 each Lail could again be the wine of the vintage. I have tasted this wine out of barrel twice and thought it was outstanding. Owner Robin Lail and family owns some of the finest dirt in Napa and we all know that what makes great wine is great dirt and some beer. Parker scored the wine 96+ and I score the wine 98/100, so we both agree on this one.
There are only 850 cases for the world and 60 bottles for Bakersfield.
Imbibe's price is $129; if you mention this email and buy 3 bottles we will offer them at $115 each. Robert Parker writes in Wine Advocate Issue #186: "Lail's flagship wine is the J. Daniel Cuvee. The 2007 is living up to all of its promise when tasted last year from barrel. There are 850 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from four separate sites in Napa (in Calistoga, Howell Mountain, Coombsville, and Rutherford). A dense purple color is accompanied by notes of graphite, licorice, black cherry liqueur, black currants, crushed rocks, spice box, and cedar. With Pauillac-like aromatic and flavor profiles, this opulent, full-bodied, rich 2007 reveals superb purity as well as definition. It may even grow in stature over the next five years, and is capable of lasting 20-25+ years."
|
2007 Opus One $165 pre-sale Next up is 2007 Opus One which has been a cult classic for years. For the last year I have been hearing from friends in the trade that with the 2007 vintage, Opus is back. This is the first wine that the Rothschild's have been wholly responsible for and they seem to have raised the bar with this release. The wine arrives in October of this year and we are doing a pre-sale. The lowest price I have seen in the nation is $165 a bottle and we'll match it. Once in stock it will be at $175 a bottle, so call in your order or stop by, and save yourself ten bucks a bottle throughout the month of September.
Robert Parker also reviewed Opus One in Wine Advocate Issue #186: "Two of the strongest wines ever made at Opus One, the 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. This is a sensational Opus One, with sweet tannin and impressive precision and depth. It can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years."

2007 Quintessa Cab $109 Last up, and the biggest must try, is the 2007 Quintessa Napa Red.
For years this property has made good wine, but never what I and many people thought they should and could produce. In 2006 Charles Thomas came over from Rudd Estate (who before that was head of wine-making for Jess Jackson overlooking the wineries of Lokoya and Cardinal and before that was head of all wine-making at Robert Mondovi). I've known Charles for over twenty years, so when I heard he was at Quintessa I knew he would raise the bar.
The 2007 is the first wine he has made at Quintessa from start to finish. I feel this is the finest Quintessa I have tasted.
The wine is now in stock at Imbibe for $109 a bottle. Don't wait.
