Boss's Corner

Hi,

We are now in a transition season -- summer to fall-- at Magicland Farms. Except for the tomatoes and peppers which are coming on fast, and our beans which are holding on pretty steady, our summer vegetables such as sweet corn, cucumbers, zucchini , yellow summer squash and melons are winding down--some faster than others.

This week will commence our main winter squash harvest season. As has been true of the last few years, we appear to have an excellent crop of winter squash. Our winter squash types include this year: acorn, Heart-Of-Gold, butternut, buttercup, spaghetti, Delica (not delicata!), blue hubbard (limited supply) and Celebration (very similar to Carnival). We also have real nice pumpkins of all sizes--from 1/2 to over 100 pounds, including rare white pumpkins that are almost snow white and not yellowish like many so-called "white pumpkins." This year we made a huge planting of gourds--tiny decorative and the large type used for crafts. This planting, unlike most, can be viewed from Gordon Avenue at the curve where Gordon and 40th streets meet.

This year we made a large planting of Roma (aka Italian, paste, plum) tomatoes and we are selling them for $12 a half bushel. We also will be having standard canning tomatoes this week for $8 a half bushel.

I plan on expanding the frequency of newsletters I send out so that you can get the latest info about Magicland Farms. The frequency of newsletters depends upon what I feel is newsworthy. However, as before, I plan on sending out at least one newsletters a week until Halloween even if there isn't that much new stuff happening. BTW, I believe I will be sending out a newsletter tomorrow evening to let you know about something new that we plan on doing. However, things aren't yet finalized so you'll have to wait and watch your inbox! Mysterious? Huh!

My best,

Tom
