Boss's Corner

Hi,

We are now picking our muskmelons!

Yesterday we started selling our muskmelons from our first patch. We have two varieties: Orange Sherbet which is the larger of the two and a bit oval in size and Majus which is smaller and rounder. Both varieties have sweet orange flesh. However, Orange Sherbet's flesh is quite firm when ripe and will keep quite well, while Majus's flesh is somewhat softer. We have an excellent crop of both varieties and tomorrow by noon we should have a good supply at our stand.   As I remember, one patch of muskmelon lasts about two weeks with normal summer weather. We do have another patch of muskmelon coming so we should be able to supply the stand for around two weeks--perhaps longer.

Nutritionally, muskmelon is a high fiber fruit, with an abundance of vitamins A and C, and potassium. This makes muskmelon a nutrient-dense food, meaning its nutritional benefits outweigh its calorie content.

Beans Are Returning

If you stop by our stand frequently and are a bean lover you probably noticed the lack of supply of beans the last two weeks. The problem was the heat and dry weather. The heat caused our second planting to over ripen way too fast and the dryness did a job on our third planting at least until that rain we had about 10 days ago--it is coming back. By the end of the week we should again have an abundance of green and yellow beans.

Mirai and Bon Appetit Sweet Corn Varieties Are Continuing

We are still picking our first planting of the really sweet Mirai corn and it looks like the second Mirai will start late in the week. Keep in mind there are actually many varieties of Mirai corn. There is yellow Mirai, white Mirai and, of course, bi-color Mirai. Our first planting of Mirai was the Mirai 311BC (BC is for bi-color) variety which has medium sized ears. The next Mirai is Mirai 336BC which has larger ears. We also have coming Mirai 411W, which is a white Mirai. In addition to white Mirai, we have regular white corn (Rembrandt and Sugar Pearl) coming soon. We are now into the third patch of Bon Appetit and it seems to have even larger ears than the first two.

Tomatoes

We have been picking our SunSugar cherry tomatoes and Little Red tomatoes for some time now. Until Thursday, all the large red slicing tomatoes were from our high-tunnel. On Thursday we started picking our large field tomatoes as well as some of our heirloom. Starting this week about 90% of our large red tomatoes will be from the field.   It will be at least two weeks before we will be selling canning tomatoes by the half bushel.

Nashle,

Tom

P.S. Here's something you might have not tried before: a muskmelon smoothie! Recipe follows.

From the Kitchen

Summertime Muskmelon Smoothie

Ingredients:
2 cups chopped muskmelon*
Juice of 1/2 a lime
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup water
1 cup ice

Instructions:

Place all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth.

*Here's one way to chop up your muskmelon. First slice off both ends to give yourself a stable base. Stand up the melon so it is vertical and with a large chef's knife, slowly remove the outer rind from the top down; just like you would a pineapple. Finally cut the muskmelon in half lengthwise, remove seeds, and chop into 2" pieces.

We appreciate your business and hope to see you this summer and fall at Magicland Farms.

Sincerely,

Tom and Annemarie Fox
