Hi,
Despite the fact Halloween is tomorrow, the fall colors are still good. That sunshine yesterday really enhanced the colors. Weatherwise, the next two weeks look to be warmer than normal but perhaps a bit wetter than normal as well. This means we will be able to leave most of our squash outside this week and perhaps next, although we will likely need to cover it at night. We still have a good supply of many apple varieties especially Jonathan, Idared, Red Delicious, Northern Spy and Empire. This week Magicland's Corner Bakery will have Double Chocolate Cupcakes, Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies, Pumpkin Coffeecake Muffins, Apple Pie Pastries, and other baked goodies.
Want to find out about the upcoming winter? Then make sure you read my November 20, 2011 issue of the Boss's corner because the Old Injun Chief will give you the lowdown! This brings up a story from my grandmother Anna who was born in Verdigris Nebraska and lived on a farm for the first few years of her life. I remember the story she told me about how they had to burn the kitchen table to keep warm. Her father then moved their family to Chicago where they sold coal. Going through what she did in Nebraska, obviously she was quite interested in the winters. Since summer was the dead season in the coal business, she was able to spend a good part of the summer in Newaygo County. Every year she asked an elderly person, that she became acquainted with during the summers, about the upcoming winter. According to her she really respected his ideas about the winter, which implies he was quite accurate. Well I am sure this person wasn't the Old Injun Chief I talk about, but I think it's OK to use a bit of literary license here.
Popcorn Update
Yesterday I ran some moisture tests on samples of our recently jarred popcorn. The tests showed it had a moisture content of 16.8% to 16.9%. Since the best popcorn has a moisture content of between 13% and 15%, I decided to test pop it as well. I was disappointed since, as I expected from the moisture tests, there were more duds at the bottom of the pan than I liked. If you purchased our jarred popcorn this year and find it not the best, bring the jar back, even if it is empty, and we will refund your money. Also, we won't be selling any jarred popcorn until we have solved this problem. I feel very bad about this! Sorry!
Nashle,
Tom
