The Boss's Corner

Hi,

Frost is forecast for Thursday night!  The National Weather Service office in GR this past Saturday morning forecast a low temp of 33F on Friday morning for Newaygo.  Saturday night they pushed this up to 36F and this morning revised it down to 31F!  I wouldn't normally worry too much since it is early in the season (I have never experienced a killing frost this early.) However, the source of the high pressure is the Arctic Ocean which still has a lot of ice, although there is a lot of open water as well.  In addition, it seems like the wind will be from the east and not blow off of relatively warm Lake Michigan (the warm water of Lake Michigan was the reason for the unusually severe weather last weekend).  One thing that points against the frost is the air will come down through central Canada where it was quite warm the last week-approaching 90F in some areas.  This may warm up the air mass more than computers realize.  Whatever happens it's going to be quite cool Wednesday and Thursday and then will warm up for the weekend and the weather looks exceptionally nice for both Saturday and Sunday.  We are making plans for the frost.  We plan on putting sprinklers up in the last bean patch-I figured last week we could start picking them on Friday.  We also plan on picking a lot of ripe and turning tomatoes and peppers and covering our slicing tomatoes.  We will hope for the best with our canning tomatoes.  Only one patch of corn won't be ripe enough to pick by Thursday and that is the only corn we will possibly lose.  The frost won't be hard enough to hurt the winter squash or pumpkins.  Of course we will be praying for minimal damage.  However, what happens is up to the Almighty's Will which doesn't always agree what we want.  By the way, the average killing frost date at the farm is October 1 which implies it would be quite unusual to get a frost on September 15 or 16

Nashle,

Tom
