The Boss's Corner

Hi,

We are now picking our last patch of white corn.  We should be done with this patch by the weekend.  We are also now starting another patch of Bi-Color Mirai.  Hopefully, another patch of Mirai will be ready by the weekend.  Also, we will start picking our butternut squash and continue picking our acorn and spaghetti squash.  While our muskmelon crop is winding down we haven't yet reached the peak of our watermelon crop.  This year our watermelon are averaging larger than the past few years with many reaching over 30 pounds.  This year we test planted Imagination seedless watermelon.  This is the best tasting seedless watermelon I have ever tasted. We have a nice crop of Gravenstein apples coming-probably will be picking them for the weekend.  I have had pies made from many different types of apples.  Gravensteins make the best pies, crisp, coffee cakes etc.  Too bad their season is so short-about a month at most.  My other two favorites for pies are Calville Blanc and Northern Spy.  Northern Spy, me thinks, may be a seedling of Calville Blanc since the are similar in several ways.  Too bad our supply of Calvilles, as always, is very limited.  Although Spies look good.

We are now picking the Flamin' Fury PF17 peach, which is a freestone larger than redhavens and with a great sweet flavor.  We have dug a few sweet potatoes for our own use and from the huge size of the sweet potatoes already, it looks like a great crop.   We hope to have a good supply of sweet potatoes for this weekend.  One thing you should keep in mind.  Freshly dug sweet potatoes aren't exceptionally sweet.  Because of their relatively low sugar content, fresh sweet potatoes are the very best for sweet potato fries.   However, we all enjoyed having fresh sweet potatoes baked, even though they weren't real sweet.  Our sampling of freshly dug sweet potatoes had a delicious flavor and the perfect texture.  If you want them sweeter, just let them sit around for a couple of weeks and they should be sweet enough for you.

The demand for canning tomatoes is quite high this year.  Our late crop of tomatoes, planted specifically for canning, is just starting to ripen.  With the dry warm weather forecasted, we should have a good supply late this week.  Keep in mind what we have for sale at any time at the stand doesn't only depend on supply, but demand.

The following are other crops we grow which should be available this week: seeded watermelon, tomatoes (slicing, SunSugar cherry, green), Viking and Paulared apples, green and yellow beans, zucchini,  yellow summer squash, cucumbers, red and Yukon Gold potatoes, green and sweet red peppers, Sweet Spanish onions, carrots with tops, eggplant, and cut sunflowers.

Nashle,

Tom
