PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome to 2011! This will be an exciting year for ERASE Racism as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary. You can help us make our June 7th Benefit the best and biggest yet. Please mark your calendars now and please let us know if you would like to help with this important fundraising event. On February 14th we will sponsor a regional forum as part of our Education Equity Campaign. This forum will convene fellow education equity advocates to discuss various policy and procedural changes that can bring us closer to our goal of racially integrated, academically excellent public school education on Long Island. Whether you are currently working on this important issue or have questions about how you can become involved, I encourage you to take part in the regional forum as well as one of our two upcoming education equity strategy discussions. For details about these three events see the Education Equity Campaign article below and download these flyers (Jan21) (Jan25). This is the time to strategize together and make our collective efforts much stronger. Recently ERASE Racism Partner John Logan has been in the news speaking about the new 2010 census data. Read the partner spotlight to see what he has to say about residential segregation on Long Island. Be well and keep in touch. V. Elaine Gross, President |

10th Anniversary Campaign
Since 2001 ERASE Racism's research, education and advocacy have decreased inequitable conditions in the region. Our work is changing the lives of African Americans and other people of color who have been denied equal access to housing choice, quality education, and good health. Join us in celebrating our 10th Anniversary. Partner with us to advance our vision of a Long Island where the color of your skin does not limit your possibilities.
More Information will be forthcoming. Save the date for the June 7th, 2011 Benefit.

Education Equity Campaign
ERASE Racism's Education Equity Campaign is designed to open up a dialogue about one of the most pressing issues of racial discrimination on Long island, education inequity, and work together to bring forth solutions. We recognize that this is a huge challenge, but allies for this kind of change are on the rise. We invite you to join the conversation and the efforts by participating in the strategy sessions and the regional forum described below.

Partner Spotlight:
John Logan, College of Advisors
Nationally recognized Brown University sociologist John Logan has recently been interviewed and quoted by such news outlets as The New York Times, USA Today, United Press International, Chicago Sun Times, The Washington Post, and the Baltimore Sun. As one of the first scholars to evaluate small area data from the Census's American Community Survey, Logan's analysis has been of much interest to those who want to know how the nation's demographics have changed throughout the past ten years. Logan, who is also a member of ERASE Racism's College of Advisors, reported that although the U.S. has experienced an increase in racial and ethnic diversity, Americans continue to live in segregated neighborhoods. According to Logan's latest report, co-authored by sociologist Brian Stults, progress in residential segregation between blacks and whites since 2000 was even less than in the 1980s and 1990s. Segregation peaked around 1960 and declined at a very slow pace between 1980 and 2000. The new data shows that in the past decade there has been very little change. Segregation of Asians actually rose substantially and is now nearly at the same level as Hispanics. Of Nassau-Suffolk, he says, "The latest data show no improvement at all in this area's extremely high level of black-white segregation. It is a tremendous challenge to turn around a region where race is so much a part of the housing market." To see Logan's complete report click here. |
Theater Fundraiser
"The play was great. I just moved to NY and this is wonderful alternative to going all the way into the city for a show. I do plan to attend other shows at this theater."
-Charlotte Denise Taylor, attended My Fair Lady
"I always look forward to seeing a show at the John W. Engeman Theater. Most recently I saw the Sound of Music. It was the perfect night out. The ERASE Racism reception provided great food and conversation, and the show was wonderful."
-Olivia Ildefonso, attended Sound of Music
