Fair Housing on Long Island
Housing ReportERASE Racism released two reports last year confirming that housing discrimination remains a critical problem facing Long Island (1) The Racial Equity Report Card: Fair Housing on Long Island and(2) Black and Latino Experiences with Discrimination on Long Island.  One of the findings in the Report Card was that based on an analysis of New York State housing discrimination statistics:  Housing discrimination is an island-wide problem with almost every Long Island community generating at least one fair housing complaint between 2000 and 2007; 47 communities in Nassau and 49 communities in Suffolk.  The second report was an opinion poll of Long Islanders conducted by the Stony Brook University Center for Survey Research.  When asked about housing discrimination:  40% of African Americans and 21% of Latinos reported that they or a family member had experienced housing discrimination.  When asked about the behaviors of realty agents: 53% of whites, 84% of blacks and 73% of Latinos reported that it was somewhat or very likely that real estate agents practiced housing discrimination.

ERASE Racism Partners with Local Students
StudentsIn collaboration with student volunteers, ERASE Racism has designed the Students Partnering to Achieve Racial Equity program. The program seeks to motivate students to make a difference in their communities and in their schools by increasing their understanding of institutional and structural racism and their ability to become racial equity advocates. The first phase focused on High School students in Nassau County and kicked off with a one-day multimedia learning forum that challenged their assumptions about race and ethnicity and increased their awareness of the damaging effects of racism.

ERASE Racism Welcomes New Board Members
We are pleased to announce the appointment of four new board members: Arthur A. Gianelli, Sister Elizabeth A. Hill, William J. Jennings II, and Deborah W. Post.

In addition, the Board elected new co-chairs - Scott A. Williams and Professor Howard A. Glickstein, Esq. After six years, the organization's founding chairman, Dr. Aldustus E. Jordan III, has stepped down. "The new board appointments bring a wealth of experience, commitment and leadership to ERASE Racism as we enter an important chapter in the battle against institutional discrimination in housing, education and healthcare," said Elaine Gross, founder and President of ERASE Racism. "We are also very appreciative of Dr. Jordan's long service and we thank him and wish him the very best."

The new directors represent decades of combined service and experience. Read the Press Release on our New Board Members.
Donor Spotlight
Founder of Pratt Center is a Committed Supporter
Ron Shiffman

Ron Shiffman gives a financial donation to ERASE Racism automatically each month through Network for Good. "We spend money on a lot more trivial things," says Ron. "I want my grandchildren to grow up in a more just world where they are equal to their peers."

To Ron, co-founder of the Pratt Center for Community Development and a professor in the Graduate Center for Planning at Pratt Institute's School of Architecture, issues of economic justice and racial equity are among his top priorities. He feels that racism is crushing for the racist, the victim and the broader society. He developed a great respect for ERASE Racism's President, Elaine Gross, and the mission and work of the organization.

Donating to ERASE Racism is easy.  You can visit the website and make a direct secure contribution or, setup a recurring contribution, like Ron, by clicking on the secure link to Network for Good or Just Give on our website.
