YOUTH ROUNDTABLE: A Talk with Andrew Young
Andrew J. Young, Jr. | When Chanelle Mickell, Hofstra University sociology major was asked what she thought about meeting a civil rights icon, she replied "I'm excited about actually meeting someone famous, like Mr. Young. When I learned he was coming I did some research about him, and I can't wait to actually sit down and talk with someone who has done so much to advance civil rights. It will be different from seeing someone on television." On Wednesday, June 2nd, at the Garden City Hotel, before the evening festivities begin for ERASE Racism's fundraising gala, Chanelle, along with other selected high school and college students from across Long Island, will participate in a special conversation with its 2010 Honoree, Ambassador Andrew Young.

MAKING CONNECTIONS: Joseph McNeil and The Long Island Immigrant Alliance
Luis Valenzuela |
Joseph McNeil |
Andrew Young's visit to Long Island for the Annual Benefit presents an opportunity for ERASE Racism to make connections, as evidenced by the Youth Roundtable event discussed above; pioneer civil rights icon with Long Island's young people. As we recognize the accomplishments of Mr. Joseph McNeil and the Long Island Immigrant Alliance and its Executive Director, Dr. Luis Valenzuela at the June 2nd Benefit we seek to make other connections.
Now he is a retired Major General in the Air Force Reserves and the Federal Aviation Administration but, in 1960, Joseph McNeil was a 17 year old college student who, as part of what became known as the Greensboro Four, participated in a sit-in at a "Whites Only" F.W. Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This act changed history.
The mission statement of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance (LIIA) says that it affirms the legal and human rights of all immigrants who are an integral part of Long Island communities. The fourty organizational members and associates of LIIA, in solidarity with immigrants that are actively engaged in the work of the coalition, are on the front lines advocating against anti-immigrant legislation--locally and nationally--and advocating for: funding for ESL programs, translation at hospitals and health clinics, and protection of worker rights and more. Under the leadership of Executive Director, Dr. Luis Valenzuela, they are a young organization that is having a big impact on Long Island. Connect with us on June 2nd as we recognize the work of Mr. McNeil and the Long Island Immigrant Alliance and its Executive Director, Dr. Luis Valenzuela. |

Phyllis Rice has been a faithful volunteer at ERASE Racism since 2006. "When I asked Phyllis if she would co-chair the 2010 Benefit, she gave it careful consideration and then said, yes!" said ERASE Racism's President, Elaine Gross. "As a volunteer I had come to respect the efforts of the organization, its leaders and staff to make Long Island a more equitable place to live," said Phyllis. "Co-chairing the benefit provided an opportunity to support the important work that ERASE Racism does."
Bill Jennings is Treasurer of the board and one of the newer members. "After hearing Phyllis' presentation to the board about what she hoped to accomplish as Benefit Co-chair, I believed that with her infectious enthusiasm ERASE would have a very successful fund raiser and I wanted to help her accomplish that goal," said Bill. "We are fortunate to have volunteers with the drive and ability of Phyllis."
"It's great to have a working committee that is as full of excitement and enthusiasm as this group," says Rosemarie Walker, the ERASE Racism staff person working with the committee. "Committee members are drawing on diverse ideas and talents such as public relations to reach out to business associates and community organizations. Others will negotiate, plan and organize for an exciting Silent Auction with fantastic items such as field level box tickets to a New York Mets game, wine tasting in a beautiful Northport home, a day in the country - featuring a round of golf at the Garden City Country Club, restaurant gift certificates, a signed copy of "No Easy Burdan" by Andrew Young, beautiful gift baskets among other great items. The event's Marketplace will showcase and sell exquisite scarf and jewelry designs by Bernie Rohe of Bernie of New York and Joyce Williams of Must Have Accessories as well as CAMBA's unique quality stone sculptures by renowned Shona artists of Zimbabwe. Bring your checkbooks and get ready for an amazing event!"
