Greetings!

There are several ways that you can learn more about your city government and your police and fire departments.  One of the best ways is to take part in a Citizens' Academy.  There are three FREE educational programs available:
The Rocky Mount Citizens' Academy covers all areas of city government, including city administration, public safety, infrastructure, finance, parks & recreation, utilities, public works, and much more.  The program lasts for ten weeks, and each week has a different subject area.  Participants will hear from various city staff members throughout the course, and sessions are held in various facilities throughout Rocky Mount.  This program is coordinated by the Human Relations Department.

The Rocky Mount Citizens' Police Academy covers areas specific to the Rocky Mount Police Department, but it also includes information on the criminal justice system as a whole.  Participants hear from RMPD officers in various areas such as constitutional & criminal law, community policing, drug enforcement, crime scene investigation, and much more.  Participants in this academy will learn what it takes to serve as a Rocky Mount Police Officer, telecommunicator, or investigator.

The Rocky Mount Citizens' Fire Academy provides an in depth review of the ever-changing work of the fire service.  Rocky Mount firefighters are now also trained as emergency medical technicians, and many RMFD staff members hold certifications in other areas related to emergency management, such as swift water rescue and hazardous materials (hazmat) response.  Participants in this academy will learn what it takes to serve as a Rocky Mount firefighter/EMT.
There is no cost to participate in any of these programs.  We encourage you to apply for the academy program that fits your schedule this fall.
