August 15, 2009 Celebrate Punta Gorda's X-treme Makeover

It's hard to believe that five years ago Hurricane Charley changed Punta Gorda forever. On Saturday, August 15, Punta Gorda will have a party to celebrate our revitalization. Plan on attending. You can get all the information you need at www.pgmakeover.com

Committee Volunteers Requested

TEAM Punta Gorda is seeking volunteers for a new multi-faceted initiative.

One element involves organizing a research entity to conduct relevant and timely applied and policy research in a variety of areas including energy and ecology. This is a collaborative initiative with various educational and other research organizations.

Another element involves organizing an activity to establish displays and scientific and historical educational information about the area and region and to facilitate visitation and access to Punta Gorda's various resources and assets.

Anyone who is interested in participating and contributing to an exciting new initiative should contact TEAM at 941-637-8326 and provide their contact information, areas of interest, and any useful experience or qualifications related to the new endeavor.

Interactive Fountain Pavers

If you haven't been to the Interactive Fountain on a hot day, you should go and see all of the activity there. Kids and adults are enjoying the cooling water spray and the beautiful surrounding area.

TEAM Punta Gorda has been selling pavers for the area leading up to and around the fountain. All pavers that have been purchased prior to June 25 have been installed. To date, over 180 pavers have been sold and more can be purchased. People enjoy walking around and seeing where their paver is located and what each paver says.

The proceeds from the sale of pavers will go toward landscaping around Laishley Park. Soon you will see shade trees, shrubs and ground cover, which will be purchased from our local Powell's Nursery.

For more information on the pavers, please go to TEAM's website or leave a message for Suzanne McCormick at 941-637-8326.

Also, the TEAM Beautification Committee is looking for volunteers who might be interested in helping keep the streetscape on Marion Avenue, Hector House Plaza and the Interactive Fountain areas looking nice. We may also enlist the help of JR Team for their community service school credit. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact Suzanne at the number above.
Articles in the Punta Gorda Herald

Be sure to check the Punta Gorda Herald on Wednesdays and look for the great articles written by Sandy Price. She will keep you informed of TEAM's history, activities and upcoming events. If there's something you'd like Sandy to write about, please let us know.
Hibiscus Bicycle Tour

A special thank you to everyone who participated in TEAM Punta Gorda's Hibiscus Bicycle Tour on Saturday, June 20. There were 152 bicycle riders out and about on the four rides.

The interesting statistic is that almost half of the riders were from outside of the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area. Next year the bicycle tour might be moved to a cooler month and hopefully bring many more visitors to Punta Gorda.

Our sponsors for the event were Punta Gorda Club, Charlotte Regional Medical Center, GBSD Group at Merrill Lynch, Charlotte State Bank, Farr Law Firm, Gulf Coast Benefit Auctions, Peace River Distributing, City of Punta Gorda, Sky View Cafe and Tarpon Coast Computers. The Bicycle Center, Acme Bicycle Shop and Charlotte County Health Department helped with the organization of the event.  And, of course, our gratitude to our volunteers.
Did you Know...

...that TEAM Punta Gorda can always use volunteers on our committees? If you have any interest, please contact the office at 941-637-8326.
