November 2010: Gratitude Every Day
Greetings!

I hope you've been having a great month, full of energy and enjoyable activities.

What a busy month it's been!  Among many highlights, earlier this month I taught a wonderful Chakra Tai Chi workshop at the Karpas Center of Beth Israel Hospital, and have been invited back for some more classes there next spring.  I also offered a health presentation about nutritional supplementation to a great group of bariatric patients in Long Island who are in the process of courageously transforming their health and lives.  It was truly a privilege to hear their stories and share some of my work with them.  And on a personal note, I went out swing dancing for the first time (after many months of classes) and had a great time!

This month I'd like to offer you a free 30 minute health consultation by phone to discuss how you may benefit from improved nutritional supplementation, and what types of supplementation are appropriate for your individual needs.  This free consultation is usually 15 minutes, but I'm offering twice the time between now and the end of the year to encourage you to take your own health and wellness that seriously -- even in this season of holiday hustle and bustle, to make time to really give yourself the attention you deserve!

I'm very pleased to be working with a cutting edge line of isotonic capable supplements, which have helped my own health and my family's health tremendously.  Quality nutritional supplements can can help boost your immune system, improve digestion, decrease inflammation or address other health concerns--when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, of course!  So this is also a great chance to ask any questions you have about health coaching or bodywork sessions.  Contact me here to schedule your free consultation.

As always, please contact me with any questions or to make an appointment for acupressure, health coaching, or medical qigong.  Gift certificates are always available.

Have a peaceful and wonderful Thanksgiving!

Warmly,
Donna

 GRATITUDE EVERY DAY
I took the photo at the top of this newsletter at the Smith College Botanic Garden while visiting my sister in Northampton, MA two weeks ago.  They had a small but very beautiful exhibition celebrating the chrysanthemum, one of my favorite flowers, and an important symbol of Pan Gu Shengong, the qigong form I practice and teach.

yellow pink mumsIt was wonderful to see such lush and colorful flowering during late autumn, when the leaves on trees are almost gone, the days are much shorter and winter is in the air.   Sometimes the approach to winter feels a little sad and scary to me -- it's darker, colder, and people seem more hunkered down.  But seeing the mums filled my heart with gratitude and reminded me that there is brightness, warmth and growth during all seasons, even if it seems less obvious.

As we approach the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, I invite you more than ever to slow down, breathe, and turn your attention toward gratitude.  Notice what is going well in your life, what's new and good that happened today or this week.  It can be something as small as receiving a nice smile from someone on the street, getting a good night's sleep or having a meal that you enjoyed.

I invite you to build your gratitude muscle by practicing this every day, not just on Thanksgiving.  Try keeping a notebook and writing down a few things you feel pleased or grateful for every day.  I have been doing this every night before bed for a couple of years, and it helps me to put a positive spin on the day that's just ended, no matter what challenges I faced or what things I'm worrying about tackling in the days ahead.  This definitely helps me sleep better!  You can also try doing this in the morning to set a positive tone for the new day.

RECIPE: Butternut Squash Apple BisqueTTdline
If you haven't finalized your Thanksgiving menu yet and are looking for something simple and delicious to make, why not try this super easy squash and apple soup?  It uses seasonal produce and is livened up with a little kick of curry.  It's totally vegetarian and can be vegan if you use coconut oil instead of butter or ghee.

INGREDIENTS:butternut squash
1 medium onion, diced
1 tablespoon butter, ghee, or coconut oil
1 tbsp curry powder (or more if you like curry)
1 butternut squash, about 1 1/2 pounds, peeled, seeded and cubed
1 large tart apple (Granny Smith or any tart variety -- if using smaller apples, use 2)
5 cups vegetable stock
Sea salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:
Peel and seed the squash and apple.  Cut into cubes and set aside.
In a large pot, heat the butter, ghee or oil and saute the onion until it's soft and translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
Add the curry powder and saute for 2 more minutes, stirring.  Don't burn it!
Add the squash, apple and vegetable stock to the pot.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer.
Simmer 25-30 minutes or until squash is tender and can easily be poked through with a fork.
Add salt to taste.
Puree the soup in a food processor or blender.
Serve warm!

OPTIONAL:  Garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro.  If you like the crisp bite of ginger, try adding 1 tablespoon chopped fresh ginger when you're sauteing the onions.

Makes 6 small-ish servings.  Double or triple the recipe if you're having more guests or want to serve larger portions.
