rice of the prairies
When we think of rice on the Prairies, we think of wild rice. If you happened to catch last weeks Dragon's Den, then you'll know that there is a new "rice" slowly taking the country by storm. From Arborg Manitoba, Cavena Nuda, a new type of oats, is hitting the shelves. The oats taste like rice and have the consistency of rice but have all of the health benefits of oats. In Winnipeg you can find the "Rice of the Prairies" at Vita Health and Organza Market. Many Manitoba chefs are also incorporating this product into their menus. For more information visit www.wedgefarms.com

P.S. One of the Dragons did invest in Cavena Nuda. Can you say oat pizza anyone???

Winnipeg Women Magazine featured Community Living Winnipeg and their Among Friends group in the September/October Issue. CLW has been around for 50 years raising the status of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Among Friends is one group that is facilitated by CLW - it provides teens with opportunities to develop independance as well as fun, social activities. Art Among Friends - inclusive art classes - have even developed art cards from paintings produced in classes. The intent is to be able to market the art cards with the proceeds going back to the artists. www.winnipegwomen.net www. communitylivingwinnipeg.com

Remember to support local business and local producers - we all benefit. Enjoy September!
