It seems like only a few fall mornings ago that "Sweaters for Seniors" came to be. It all started in 2008, when we realized just how much seniors love to wear them...even in the summer. So, we put a collection box out in the parking lot of our office and we were in business! That year, we collected more sweaters than the nursing homes we'd planned to give to needed. A good problem! So we called Gwinnett County Senior Services to see if they could use the extras...a couple hundred of them actually. The answer was a very enthusiastic "yes" and the rest is history. More than 2,000 sweaters collected and three years later, our 4th annual S4S promises to be a great one. Thanks to this year's collection partners, we plan to deliver hundreds more sweaters this year to Gwinnett County Senior Services. And we'll do it after Thanksgiving right when it starts to get really nippy outside. So, just how valuable is a knit top you ask? With so many homebound seniors on fixed budgets and everything costing more these days, seniors must often turn down their thermostat to save money on heating bills. What's more, some medications thin the blood, making some seniors even more prone to being cold. A simple new or like new sweater makes a huge difference to the physical comfort and health of a senior. Plus, it just feels like a warm and fuzzy gift. Because it is!
Be well and warm,
