Sweaters For Seniors Issue November/December 2011

It's that time again! Our 4th Annual........

It seems like only a few fall mornings ago that "Sweaters for Seniors" came to be. It all started in 2008, when we realized just how much seniors love to wear them...even in the summer. So, we put a collection box out in the parking lot of our office and we were in business! That year, we collected more sweaters than the nursing homes we'd planned to give to needed. A good problem! So we called Gwinnett County Senior Services to see if they could use the extras...a couple hundred of them actually. The answer was a very enthusiastic "yes" and the rest is history. More than 2,000 sweaters collected and three years later, our 4th annual S4S promises to be a great one. Thanks to this year's collection partners, we plan to deliver hundreds more sweaters this year to Gwinnett County Senior Services. And we'll do it after Thanksgiving right when it starts to get really nippy outside. So, just how valuable is a knit top you ask? With so many homebound seniors on fixed budgets and everything costing more these days, seniors must often turn down their thermostat to save money on heating bills. What's more, some medications thin the blood, making some seniors even more prone to being cold. A simple new or like new sweater makes a huge difference to the physical comfort and health of a senior. Plus, it just feels like a warm and fuzzy gift. Because it is!

Be well and warm,

A Sweaters For Seniors Celebration

What a fun-filled creative morning we shared with Gwinnett County's seniors on Monday, October 24! Nine lucky people went home with a brand new hand crocheted lap blanket. Thanks to Maya Kelkar and her Girl Scout troop for donating them to our 4th Annual Sweaters For Seniors! We also passed out the art supplies for a "Create A Sweater" project -- tissue paper, glue sticks, crayons, colored pencils and markers. Not only did the many seniors go home with beautiful handknit items....They also designed their very own, too!

cougars Announcing our flagship school for this year's "Sweaters For Seniors"

We're giving a huge cheer for Pam Krumpach, High School Department Head and Honors Language Arts Teacher at Covenant Christian Academy. Thanks to Mrs. Krumpach, the Cougars are going strong collecting Sweaters For Seniors!

Mrs. Krumpach says, "I like to stay busy!" In addition to teaching and lots of other projects, she's organized a fun sweater collecting competition between the classes at her school. Buddying various grades with each other, the group that collects the most sweaters will win a whole Casual Week!

Covenant Christian Academy will also be doing our "Create-A-Sweater" project and exhibiting the student''s work. Each piece will be available for sale and proceeds will benefit Gwinnett County Senior Services.

If you'd like to help the Cougars collect sweaters, stop by their annual Fall Festival this Saturday, November 5. Click here for more information.
