MAY/JUNE

2011

sunDear Friend:

What does the word, "warmth" mean to you?

Is it the heat you feel when you step outside on a sunny spring day?

Is it the coziness of a blanket on your lap at night?

Or is it that good little feeling you get when you show you care for someone else?

If you said all of the above, you are correct!

As the weather heats up to bring us yet another lovely springtime here in Atlanta, it seems like a good time to talk about warmth.

Warmth can also be generated from a blanket on one's lap. That's why Maya Kelkar of Norcross hand-crocheted four lap blankets to contribute to our Sweaters For Seniors program. Read about Maya and her ambitious project in this issue of Home Care Today.

Not only is Maya sharing her warmth for seniors, but so is Steve Deraney, Community Relations for Compassionate Hospice of North Georgia. A lifelong salesperson (starting in his father's retail store when he was seven) and educator for 32 years, Steve has found a passion for helping patients and their families with hospice care.

Finally as that warm sun shines through those windows of yours, don't forget about our "Spring Cleaning Special" -- one of our new Silver Platter Services. These are single-visit home care packages designed to help you or your loved one make the most of living at home with ease.

Be well!

Maya Kelkar and her hand crocheted lap blankets for Sweaters for Seniors.

Warm-hearted Girl Scout lends her talents to "Sweaters for Seniors."

This past winter, just after we'd wrapped up our third annual "Sweaters for Seniors,"we got an email from Maya Kelkar, a Norcross High School tenth-grader.

In that note, Maya asked if she could contribute some hand-crocheted lap blankets to our Sweaters for Seniors program.

We answered with a very definitive and grateful "Yes!"

So, Maya set out to work, keeping in touch with us through the winter on her progress. (She's extremely professional for a 10th grader.)

Then, two weeks ago, Maya's mom dropped the 30" x 30" lap blankets off at our office. After we saw the work that went into these beautiful creations, we're happy to know that Maya will also earn a Girl Scout "Gold Award," the highest award given by the organization.

Of course, there is no better reward to us in knowing four special seniors will benefit from these gorgeous (and warm) knit pieces.

We are holding onto them until we can get them into the propert hands or should I say onto the proper laps..those who will treasure Maya's amazing craftsmanship.

If you know an elderly person in need who would love and appreciate one of Maya's masterpieces, please call our office: 770-736-7977

Stephen Deraney, PhD, Community Relations, Compassionate Hospice

Hospice care patients and their families find comfort in Gwinnett County from Stephen Deraney of  Compassionate Hospice

Hospice care provides terminally ill patients and their family members with end-of-life care, with special emphasis on pain control and symptom management. The service is covered by Medicare.

But according to the National Palliative & Hospice Care Organization, only 4 out of 10 patients who qualify for hospice actually use it.

But Steve Deraney is out to change that. A former college president and educator of 32 years, Deraney has found another calling in life working in Community Relations for Compassionate Hospice. Instead of college and high school students, Deraney is now educating doctors, health care providers, their patients and families about all that hospice can do.

"I know what it feels like firsthand not to grieve," says Deraney referring to a time when he cared for his dying brother, "People need to grieve."

While palliative care helps relieve the pain of terminal patients, other services by Compassionate Hospice meet the needs of the patient's family as well.

For instance, a social worker might help a family get the patient's affairs in order. He or she is just one part of the team which includes an RN, a CNA, chaplain and grief counselor. Compassionate Hospice's clients also benefit from their volunteers, who assist them in virtually every area of their organization.
