Dear Friend:
At AHCS, helping seniors continue to enjoy being independent at home is what we do. And nothing celebrates "home" more than Thanksgiving.
After all, when you think about it, it's the ultimate American family tradition. A great big feast when family members -- moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, kids, grand kids, uncles, aunts and anyone who feels like kin gathers to celebrate it all together!
Unfortunately, there's an elderly population that lives at home, but with limited resources and little or no help from family members. These seniors rely on help from agencies like Gwinnett County Senior Services and Senior Citizen Services of Metro Atlanta that deliver "Meals on Wheels" and other crucial services to them.
But in this challenging economy, these organizations are facing their own hard times with budget cuts and rising needs within their own communities.
Thankfully, with our school partners this year, we're able to help out a bit with our 3rd Annual Sweaters for Seniors. Click here to see what Joe Waters, national cause marketing advocate has to say about our program!
For instance, the bags and bags of new or like-new cardigans, v-necks and blankets collected by The Galloway School will go to Senior Citizen Services of Metro Atlanta. Thanks to Missy Hirsh, Assistant College Counselor and Galloway's student body, SCSATL will be delivering more than turkey and mashed potatoes with their Thanksgiving Meals-On-Wheels.
At J.C. Magill Elementary in Gwinnett County, Principal Crystal Collins has lead her students and faculty to not just collect sweaters, but funds, too. Through AHCS' new "Create-A-Sweater" Pinup Program, Magill's young artists have colored and designed sweaters to sell for 1.00 each to the PTA.
We'll be matching Magill's funds raised dollar for dollar up to $1,000. What that means is that up to $2,000 -- will go to help out Gwinnett County Senior Services. Our final collections and results will be available and reported in a special December issue of Home CareTODAY.
Until then, we wish you many wonderful autumn days leading up to a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. May you spend it in peace, health, prosperity and happiness with the ones you love. May it be filled with many happy Thanksgiving memories of the past and lots of special hopes for the future.
Be well, Sharna Fulton Director of Marketing Alternative Home Care for Seniors (AHCS) sharna@alternative4seniors.com

Mom's yummy yam recipe. If there's one thing I've discovered, everyone has their very own Thanksgiving yam recipe. Here's mine based on what my mother served us every Thanksgiving when I was growing up at home. Drain a few cans of yams and then mash the yams.
Spread the mashed yams in a greased brownie or square cake pan.
Top them with slices of pineapple rings. Don't overlap the slices.
Layer a plentiful blanket of tiny marshmallows over the yams until you can't see any orange yams.
Bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes making sure that the marshmallows are toasted a pretty brown color, but not burnt.
