Dear Friend:
Can you believe Valentine's Day is almost here? My how time flies! It's once again the season for our annual celebration of "love." Love comes in many forms. As a noun, love is something we give to our family and friends. It's the countless everyday ways we show kindness, caring and compassion to our fellow man. In the wake of last month's tragedy in Haiti, there was a great outpouring of love from the American people, its businesses and organizations. At "Alternative," our charitable donation of choice was HelpAge USA, the first group to reach the Port Au Prince Municipal Nursing Home. We've included a story this month about how AHCS' owners Derrick and Shawn Merchant
found out about and chose to give to HelpAge USA.
Love is also a verb. For some, it's the act of doing something we're passionate about. Recently, we sat down and talked to a woman who's extremely committed to helping seniors in Atlanta. Many of you know her as Sunny Aasgaard, publisher of the Senior Resources Directory. Read how Sunny puts her heart and sole into the SRD in this month's e-news.
Last but not least, love comes from the heart. And one good way to take care of your heart is through cardiovascular exercise. We invite you to come walk or "Run The Reagan" 5K, 10K, half marathon or 1 mile fun run on February 13 in Snellville, GA.The team from AHCS will be giving out a small Valentines gift (while supplies last.)
And we would "love" to see you there!
Be well and Happy Valentines Day,
Sharna Fulton, Marketing Director

On January 12, a massive earthquake affected 3.5 million people in Haiti. Alternative Home Care for Seniors watched the news along with the world and saw a story of seniors at the Port Au Prince Municipal Nursing home in dire need of assistance. The following excerpt from a press release explains how we were able to connect with and support the first major organization to reach and assist the Haitian seniors:
Snellville, GA January 26--An Atlanta based company that provides home care to seniors has donated $1K
today to HelpAge.org to assist Haiti's elderly population.
The donation will directly benefit the Port Au Prince Nursing Home and would not have been possible without the help of modern media, Google and Twitter.
Last week, the AP and CNN reported that 70 patients at the nursing home were suffering and forgotten. What the reports left out was information on how to get critical food, water and medical attention to these seniors.
"I saw the horrific conditions on CNN; Seniors were wearing dirty diapers with no food or water and I knew we had to do something," explains Derrick Merchant, co-owner of Alternative Home Care for Seniors. "We wanted to make sure that our donation would go directly to those seniors, but didn't know how," added his brother, Shawn Merchant, AHCS co-owner.
A google search for three days yielded no answers. Link after link, search engine listings only had stories of Haiti's forgotten elderly. Finally, while online last Thursday, AHCS found out an organization called HelpAge.org was on their way to Haiti. AHCS sent @HelpAge the following tweet on Thursday, January 21 @ 12:40 p.m. and also received a tweet back:
@ HelpAge When will help arrive @ Port Au Prince Municipal Nursing Home? We'll make
donation when we know how 2 get it 2 seniors. Pls
advise!
@HomeCare4Senior Our emergency team were @
Municipal Nursing home last night and will be reporting bk 2 us
today
The two organizations were finally able to connect through Twitter. "We're just one company using social media to reach out to the global community. Imagine the
impact social media is making worldwide," said Derrick Merchant.
