Dear friend:
As you may have heard, we are now in the midst of our 2nd Annual Sweaters for Seniors. While the weather's still warm, winter is coming. And soon, many homebound seniors will be struggling to afford high heating bills, their food, medications, etc.

Our goal here is to plan a few months in advance and to collect as many new or like-new sweaters and blankets before the cold hits. This year's donations will again support the efforts of Gwinnett County Senior Services.

And speaking of planning, please read Derrick Merchant's article below, Key Ways To Maximize Your Home Care Experience. It's Part 1 of a 4 part series to follow the next few months in Home Care Today.

Thanks and remember, as a wise person once said, "Failing to plan is planning to fail."

Key Ways To Maximize Your Home Care Experience
Part 1 in a 4 part series

Being able to stay in our own home as we age is preferred by many. But in most cases, the necessity for home care catches us off-guard. The situation usually becomes urgent when a loved one is about to be released from the hospital or has some sort of debilitating illness that renders them unable to function independently.

Today, however, as we become more aware and informed, the word about Long Term Health Care Insurance and the home care industry is becoming more and more mainstream. From initial planning for home care to creating a care plan and understanding contracts and rates, here's how to make the most of home care service to have a good experience. Today, we'll discuss how to prepare for it.

1.  Planning:  It's always best to be prepared for any situation before it occurs. As we see ourselves or our loved ones getting closer to retirement age, it's wise to begin having conversations about our wishes in the event we become disabled. Some people may wish to be placed in a nursing home, though most would like to remain in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own home. Either way, one major concern is affordability.

In planning, consider whether or not Long Term Health Care Insurance is appropriate for you. If you're in a financial position to pay for ongoing home care services without hardship, obviously you need not be concerned about Long Term Health Care Insurance. However, for the majority of us, the middle class, Long term Health Care Insurance needs to be a part of our planning to afford having a caregiver help us at home.

The cost of home care varies widely depending on the needs of the patient. In cases where the patient requires 7 days 24 hours a day, the cost could be as much as two to three thousand dollars per week or even more per individual. At this rate, it doesn't take very long to deplete savings.
