What this ball teaches us about home care.

cricket ballThe other day when I arrived at the office, Derrick, one of our co-owners at Alternative HC was holding a round object in his hand. "Do you know what this is? he asked.

After a few guesses, it came to me.
"A cricket ball!" I exclaimed. After all, I knew that Derrick and his brother, Shawn grew up in Antigua in the West Indies where the sport of cricket is a national pastime. But I'd never seen a ball like this before--about the size of a baseball, but harder and a little bit more decorative like you see here.

Derrick proceeded to demonstrate the various ways a cricket ball is pitched. So, I asked him, "What did cricket teach you about the home care business?"

"I learned the value of teamwork," he answered. "When you're playing a team sport like cricket, you learn to rely on others and that others rely on you. Together, you become a team, something bigger than yourself."

But how does that relate to home care?

For starters, a senior needing at-home personal assistance needs more than just the right home care provider. Often times, that agency is referred by a social worker at a hospital or rehab center who plans for the care the patient receives when discharged. Obviously the senior's family members are an important team player. They understand their mother or father's needs and desires. Of course, the caregiver the agency matches with the senior is vital to successful home care. Finally, let's not forget the senior or person receiving the care. They're like the team captain bringing everyone together. So, you see, like winning at cricket, winning at home care requires teamwork, too.

That's what we hope to convey at Alternative Home Care for Seniors--That our philosophy is "We, not me." What can we do to be an important part of your senior home care team?

Joel BeckDon't Become a Victim of Financial Fraud

According to state regulators, about half of the complaints they receive involve senior investment fraud.

The majority of stockbrokers and financial advisors pride themselves on providing quality service to their clients and work hard to create an investment strategy designed to meet the client's goals based on their unique situation.  Unfortunately, a small number of brokers violate industry rules and regulations causing harm to their clients - sometimes wiping out a client's assets.

Here are some tips on how to protect your assets:

  • Know whom you're dealing with.  Check the background of your broker and brokerage firm using FINRA's BrokerCheck system or your state securities commissioner's office.  These services are free.
  • Provide your broker with clear information about your financial situation, your goals for the investment, and your risk tolerance.
  • Do your homework.  Make sure you understand what you're investing in before you make the investment.
  • Don't be rushed.  Even if a salesman requires you to act immediately or risk losing out on a great investment deal, don't act hastily.  Do your homework.
  • Make payments for your investments to the brokerage firm as instructed.  Be wary of making your check to the broker or a third party.  Make sure the brokerage firm has approved the investment.
  • Review your monthly account statements.  Look for trades or cash disbursements that you did not authorize.  If you find anything suspicious, immediately contact the brokerage firm.
  • Be wary of stocks touted or hyped over the internet or in emails.
  • Be aware of exaggerated claims of returns, such as the broker claiming you'll receive above-market rates of return, or that your money will double in a year, etc.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
