The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities has made available a wonderful resource for those students exploring college opportunities in New York State. This publication, entitled "Your College Search", provides valuable information on New York's 100 plus private independent colleges and universities.

Information on each school is sorted by the Academic Programs available. Additionally, there is a school locator which maps each school in the state to make it easy for students to locate those schools closest to their home and to understand exactly where others not so close by are located across New York State.

Most young people in mentoring programs have aspirations; yet, some have trouble connecting the dots necessary that take them from where they are to where they hope to be. So - it's not too early for middle school aged youth, as well as high schoolers, to start thinking about how to develop a college plan.

To order free copies of "Your College Search" simply visit www.nycolleges.org. It's never too early to begin this process. Your mentors provide immeasurable support and comfort to the young people you serve. This publication can be an invaluable tool in helping them help your young people help themselves. Order as many copies as you need. The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities makes the publication available at no cost.

Consistent with the recognized need addressed by "Your College Search", MPLI will be introducing a curriculum specifically designed to assist mentors in helping mentees connect the dots referenced earlier. Look for more information on MPLI's "Discovering The Possibilities" toolkit which will be available this fall.

Facebook allows us to be a little more spontaneous than other forms of communication. Besides making available all of our newsletters and information about our trainings etc., we hope to make it very program centric. We want to tell everyone out there more about the work you and your mentors are doing.

If you are not on Facebook, it's easy to sign up. Importantly - with the security safeguards Facebook now provides, you can define whether or not you wish your Facebook page to be visible to others and, if so, to whom you want the page to be accessible.

So join us. We hope to create a large community of coordinators, mentors and others interested in mentoring on Long Island and for all of us to share our experiences and best practices.

Facebook members - Just click here. It's that easy.

If you're not a member, consider joining. Research shows that the fastest growing demographic on Facebook are adults over 50. It could be time for you to take the plunge.

Did you know that 50% of all the high school dropouts in the United States attend one of 2,000 identified low performing high schools? We have six high schools on Long Island included among the 2,000 schools so identified.

Accordingly - a nationwide program entitled "America's Promise" has been organized specifically to build a coalition to address the dropout problem in these targeted communities. The coalition is specifically focused on delivering the Five Promises originally recognized by "America's Promise" as the essential building blocks for healthy, successful young people.

The Five Promises are:

The "America's Promise" coalition is a national movement to transform awareness of the dropout crisis into sustained, results-driven action. It's a call to action for concerned citizens, businesses, community leaders, policy makers, educators and the nation. With leadership and focus, this is a solvable problem.

It should be clear that the Five Promises and America's Promise are applicable across all communities and schools. To find out more about America's Promise and how your school or organization can become part of this national initiative, visit the America's Promise website.
