Mentoring Partnership of Long Island
December  2009
A Message From Jean               Appelstein

2009 was a year of accomplishment for the Mentoring Partnership in spite of the challenging economy! This year, we:
  • Started 15 new mentoring programs
  • Hosted over 300 mentors, mentees and mentoring program coordinators at our annual conference
  • Trained over 1,200 mentors, mentees and program coordinators
  • Assisted local mentoring programs access over $200,000 in federal funds
  • Supported 229 mentoring programs with information on research findings, resource development, recruiting and best practices

We could not have accomplished this good work without YOUR continued support!

We have made progress and there is much more to do.

Thank you so much and happy holidays!

MPLI's popular Mentoring Matters Conference will once again be held at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. This year's two day event is scheduled for Friday, March 12th and Saturday, March 13th. Appelstein

As in past years, Friday's program will be structured for mentoring program coordinators, educators and others involved in delivery of social services to young people on Long Island. We are very pleased to have as our special guest, Dr. Joan Y. Reede, the director of the Minority Faculty Development Program and faculty director of Community Outreach Programs at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reede will deliver introductory remarks and conduct a workshop as part of the Friday program.

Saturday's programming will be specifically geared to Mentors and Mentees. Special care is being taken this year to provide distinct, age appropriate programming for both middle school aged and high school aged students.

The Conference presents a unique opportunity for those in the mentoring community who are not presently mentoring a child or not involved in operating a program to experience some of what we do first hand. You can attend either day's program or both. Many of you have attended our Benefit or have been Teens on the Job hosts in past years. The Conference offers you the chance to meet and share with program coordinators and/or spend time with the many mentoring pairs that will be attending on Saturday. We'd love to get to know you better and for you to become more familiar with our work.

As always, a Mentoring Matters Conference brochure with detailed program descriptions will be distributed in early January. This brochure will be distributed by email and will be downloadable from our Mentoring Partnership of Long Island website. In the meantime, mark your calendars and save the date.

Designers' Showcase® '09 not only presented the Mentoring Partnership with an opportunity to raise much needed funds, it also allowed the Partnership to tell our story to the 6,000 visitors who passed through the front door during the 6 week period that the Showcase ran. We've already fielded multiple phone calls from showcase visitors inquiring about becoming volunteer mentors.

We wanted to once again thank our wonderful co-chairs, Rene Boisi and Susan Karches, for a spectacular Preview Reception, as well as all the other friends who helped make the entire Showcase so successful. We also wanted to share a few photos with those of you who were unable to attend the Preview Reception. It was truly a memorable evening.
