Mentoring Matters Conference |
SAVE THE DATE!
MPLI's popular Mentoring Matters Conference will once again be held at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. This year's two day event is scheduled for Friday, March 12th and Saturday, March 13th.
As in past years, Friday's program will be structured for mentoring program coordinators, educators and others involved in delivery of social services to young people on Long Island. We are very pleased to have as our special guest, Dr. Joan Y. Reede, the director of the Minority Faculty Development Program and faculty director of Community Outreach Programs at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reede will deliver introductory remarks and conduct a workshop as part of the Friday program.
Saturday's programming will be specifically geared to Mentors and Mentees. Special care is being taken this year to provide distinct, age appropriate programming for both middle school aged and high school aged students.
As always, a Mentoring Matters Conference brochure with detailed program descriptions will be distributed in early January. This brochure will be distributed by email and will be downloadable from our Mentoring Partnership of Long Island website. In the meantime, mark your calendars and save the date. |
January is National Mentoring Month |
Find a way to celebrate National Mentoring Month. There are so many things that you can do with your mentors and mentees to join in this national celebration - and - you can do them without spending a lot of money.
Why not hold a Thank Your Mentor Day?
The official national "Thank Your Mentor Day" is January 21st. Visit www.nationalmentoringmonth.org for some great ideas on how you can mark this special day.
While the Mentoring Partnership has ordered some of the materials featured on the website mentioned above, this year you can directly order these very same materials yourself by visiting www.nationalservicepubs.org. It's easy, all the materials are free and they will be delivered to your doorstep.
Order beautiful mentoring posters for your mentors and mentees or professionally designed "Thank Your Mentor" cards. You can even order mentoring bookmarks which you can distribute throughout your school, agency or community.
Here's another possibility. One of our sister organizations in a neighboring state is sponsoring Faith in Action Sunday on January 17th. They are encouraging faith institutions to deliver sermons promoting mentoring and to encourage members to become mentors. Why not reach out to faith based institutions in your community to do the same? The very materials used to promote mentoring referenced above can be ordered on their behalf or by them to support this kind of outreach.
Act now. The holidays are quickly approaching and it will be National Mentoring Month before you know it.

Bethpage Scholarship Opportunity |
|
Bethpage Federal Credit Union is participating in a statewide college scholarship program available to college bound high school seniors attending college for the first time in the fall of 2010. Applicants must be credit union members, but this sounds more complicated than it really is. One just needs to open a savings account at Bethpage to become a member. To access the scholarship application and a copy of the guidelines, visit the Bethpage Federal Credit Union website. |
