A Message From Jean
Maybe it's because I am still a child at heart, but I always think of September as the beginning of a new year. The new notebooks and sharp pencils - they signal a fresh start. And as school resumes, many of our mentoring programs begin again for the school year. Mentors and mentees meet again after the summer break. And yet, there are always new children who need mentors - whether because their mentors have moved away or because they are just starting in a new school or new grade. Building a new friendship is a great way to make a new start. Perhaps this fall, you could take the 1 hour per week to begin mentoring a young person. There are over 200 programs that would welcome you right now! In the magical musical, Wicked, the singers talk about how their friendship has changed their lives...
BECAUSE I KNEW YOU I HAVE BEEN CHANGED FOR GOOD... Enjoy the magic. Be a mentor.

Mentoring Reaches New Heights |
We've always said that we'd go anywhere, anyplace, anytime to spread our message about mentoring. Little did we know that Leadership Council Co-Chair Kirsten Heinemann would be taking our message to the top of Mount Kilamanjaro.
We realize that you can't see it very well in the photo of Kirsten at the summit (pictured just to the right), but nestled in her hand is a Mentoring Partnership banner, complete with the double Omega logo. Kirsten had actually fashioned a high tech solution for attaching the banner to the summit signs visible behind her, but at 19,000 plus feet things don't always go exactly as planned. As she explained to us, one of her groups guides devised a quick fix that assured that the Mentoring Partnership banner flew high (at least until the next snow storm blew in).
Pictured below are a couple more shots of Kirsten and her group of close friends who made the six day trek up Kilamanjaro together. Kirsten's entire group of five made the assault on the summit successfully and we are happy to report that everyone made it off the mountain safely with a lifetime of memories to share with family and friends.

Mentoring Partnership Receives Federal Grant |
Through the office of US Representative Steve Israel (Democrat, 2nd Congressional District), The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island applied for and received a $95,000 grant to develop a curriculum that will help mentors increase college and career awareness among their middle school mentees.
Funds from the grant will also help build and support mentoring programs in the Second Congressional District. We thank Congressman Israel for his generous backing of this important initiative, as well as US Representative Carolyn McCarthy (Democrat, 4th Congressional District) who also supported our efforts.
Many of the mentees in the programs we serve come from low-income households which typically have less access to college planning information. While mentors cannot remedy this problem entirely, using mentors and the mentor-mentee relationship to deliver college planning information makes perfect sense. Mentors have relationships with their mentees through which they serve as guides and advisers and provide role modeling and leadership to help students make plans for the future. They can help create a "culture of college" for these students, helping them realize that a college education is possible. We have chosen to focus on middle school students to help them begin thinking about how to research careers and start planning for college.
The curriculum covers topics such as: researching colleges, making a plan to get to college, finding out about how to pay for college, exploring career interests, improving study skills and making the most of high school. It is a very interactive program that uses many online tools and resources that mentors and mentees can explore together, such as testimonials from first generation college students. The Mentoring Partnership is excited to be launching this program in two middle schools this fall. |
