Mentoring Partnership of Long Island
 February 2009
We're going green!

This e-newsletter is just one of the many steps the Mentoring Partnership is taking to reduce our use of paper (and trees!)  We're also launching our redesigned website www.mentorkids.org

Beside the positive impact on our environment, these steps will reduce our expenses to that we have more funds to spend on developing mentoring programs, recruiting and training volunteers and helping more young people!

Please visit
our website to:
   * see Katie talk about what it's like to have a mentor
   * learn where you can volunteer
   * see the stars of the mentoring community in our Mentoring Hall of Fame!

And please share this newsletter with a friend.  Just hit the "forward email" command at the bottom of this page.

We hope you like these improvements as much as we do.  Please let us know what you think. Email me at jcohen@mentorkids.org.

As always, thank you for caring about Long Island's children!

Mentoring Matters Conference - March 6th and 7th

Bethpage/BlackMPLI will once again hold its annual Mentoring Matters Conference at Long Island University, C.W Post Campus on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th.
  Conference- adults
Friday's program is especially designed for program coordinators. It's a great way to find out what others are doing on Long Island and expand your own personal network of those active in Long Island's mentoring community. We are particularly pleased to have Charlie Appelstein as our keynote speaker who will speak to the "Power of a Strength-Based Approach in Mentoring Children & Youth". If you've never seen Charlie Appelstein present, you are in for a treat. We guarantee that you will not doze off during his presentation.

 Conference- session                Conference Kids

Saturday's program is designed for mentors and mentees. What a wonderful way to spend time with your mentee on a college campus. The kids will have a full program of activities focused on self exploration and development. Mentors can accompany their mentors or attend a separate mentor track with programming specifically designed for adult mentors.

Scenes From Mentor/Mentee Day at the Islanders

Islanders 3    islanders- ice  Thanks to the generousity of Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Smithtown Acura and the New York Islanders, over 400 mentors and mentees from 15 mentoring programs, representing both Nassau and Suffolk County, were guests of the Mentoring Partnership at the Islanders game on January 19th. Mentor/Mentee Day was particularly significant this year because it fell both on Martin Luther King's birthday and in January, which is National Mentoring Month.
