  PARSHAT YITRO

This week Michal Elzur, a 12th grade student, delivered her Dvar Torah on Parshat Yitro.  She focused on whether or not the Jews really had the "choice" of receiving the Torah and then related it to her experience at TVT. Here is an edited excerpt from her Dvar Torah...

I realized that at the time of receiving the Torah, the Israelites were incapable of making the decision for themselves.
Only after undergoing many challenges throughout Jewish history and overcoming them with the help of G-d, they finally decided, willingly, that they wanted to follow the commandments and have G-d by their side.

This is similar to our situation as students at TVT. Unlike other schools, TVT incorporates Jewish values and lessons into its daily curriculum. Our curriculum includes taking Hebrew and Judaica classes, participating in Tefillah twice a week, and having special assemblies for all the Jewish holidays.

Ever since I can remember, TVT students, myself included, have questioned the value of Hebrew classes, wearing kippot and studying Judaica. Now, as a senior, I view things differently. In a few months I will have the option to choose whether I want to continue learning Judaica, voluntarily go to Shul to pray, or make my decisions using the Jewish ethics I have learned.

A few years ago I thought it was a huge waste of time, but I now I realize that I am leaving TVT not only with comprehension of math and science, but also with a deeper knowledge that will help me with real situations that I will face in my life. This was a realization I was only able to make after having many different experiences.

Similarly, the Jews only accepted God's commandments after hundreds of years and generations of experiences, miracles and hardships. Just like the Israelite nation, I was too young to understand the importance of a Jewish education.

I am honestly grateful that I had someone who made the decision for me, even if it was forced. My message to all the TVT students is to not overlook our education at TVT. I know from personal experience it takes a while to realize that Hebrew and Judaica can actually enrich our lives later. Next time you are sitting bored in Tefillah, think about the fact that someone older and wiser was looking out for you and knows that one day you will appreciate the decision they had made for you.

Shabbat Shalom!

This week we are proud present a day in the life of SOCIAL STUDIES & HISTORY...

LOWER SCHOOL

pointing to the continents that correspond to the habitats of their selected animal

This week in Kindergarten the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Oh dear! We have six more weeks of winter. The children had fun making their groundhogs pop out of their burrow while reciting a poem about Groundhog Day. They were introduced to Punxsutawney, Philadelphia and the historical legend of Groundhog Day. As part of our social studies unit, the students are doing an in-depth project based on our theme "We Are The World". The children have been actively engaged in their learning, making decisions about what they are studying and becoming an expert on their particular animal and continent in which they live.  Children have researched their animal's habitats and have been excited in the creation of their animals and habitat dioramas.

1- 5: "We all have dreams!!!"  In Social Studies, the first graders are learning about famous Americans whose contributions have made our country great! The children learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his peaceful fight for equal rights for all people. We are beginning our study of Presidents Washington and Lincoln and their contributions to our country. We will be comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of these two presidents, then, some of the first graders will write their own presidential speeches and present them to their classmates.

"Where in the World is Irvine, California?" The 2nd graders will be finding their location on any map, whether it is a map of the whole planet or a map of their county. Students also had a great time on the computers using Google Maps to find out how far they live from TVT!

The highlight of each week for second graders is City Day. During City Day, students have completed their maps of the city using map key symbols that they have created. Citizens voted for the winning map that will represent their city. In Moonlight City, Gina Roseman's map was chosen. In Rocky Road City, students voted for Daniel Nassir's map design. Fun City's winning map was designed by Charly Scheftz. We have also talked about jobs that students will have in the city. Students received a job application that they had to fill out in class. They wrote the 3 jobs that they were interested in and had to give specific reasons why they would be good for that job.  We will also soon begin our construction of the city by transforming large boxes into the different buildings of our city. We hope to have everyone stop by to see it soon!

"We are the World!"
The 3rd graders are finishing up their geography unit. In this unit they learned about lines of longitude and latitude, the equator, prime meridian, and the oceans and continents of the world. Students made paper maché globes, attatched and labeled the oceans and continents and pinpointed various country locations on the globe. The unit will culminate with a presentation on February 17th, in which students will showcase a country they have studied and completed research on.

"Did you know?" TVT 4th graders have been touring the 5 regions of the U.S.A.! Within their text they have taken a train tour of the Northeast, a boat and bus tour of the Southeast, a crop duster tour of the Midwest, a big rig tour of the Southwest, and a van and airplane tour of the West. Now that their traveling is complete, groups in each class will research the current resources and weather of each region. Statistic maps, internet, and library resources are being used in class by these diligent news reporters! Students are also busy conducting individual research about a specific stop on their given "tour" - but the fun part is still to come! "News Studio Room 302" will be rolling cameras as each group in the entire 4th grade share the anchor seat and give us a Special News Report about their region. Each 4th grade news anchor will be able to share individual research as well as group effort when their report is presented "LIVE" in class. Look for clips of these 4th Grade Special News Reports ... coming soon!

"Extra! Extra! Read all about it." The patriots have finally defeated the redcoat army and have forced General Cornwallis to surrender! The fifth graders have been learning the causes and effects of the American Revolution and will now step into understanding how our Constitution and central government system was established. They will begin researching famous presidents of the past to show the contributions they have made to our nation's history. The culmination of this research project will end with a visit to the Nixon Library!

MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL:
The History teachers in the middle and upper schools love what we do. We work to develop and strengthen skills that scaffold throughout students' years at TVT. Middle school curriculum focuses on bridging our students from the elementary setting to the upper school classroom. As such, we focus on fostering and building organizational and study skills, independent and critical thinking as well as teaching the foundations of reading for comprehension, note taking, and writing. Upper school curriculum builds on these by reinforcing those learned in middle school while adding specific writing and research targets and high-level textual analysis.

All this occurs as we teach the historical content of the different grade levels as enumerated in the California Standards. We are excited about bringing the knowledge of our past to students, and we are passionate about creating better citizens both in our own country and the global society.

Step back in time with us and peak at what we've been doing lately in our classrooms...

6th Grade:  In Mr. Fellowes' class, the 6th grade students are learning about the rise of large Agricultural communities in the Middle East and the birth of large civilizations in an area of the Middle East called the Fertile Crescent. The 6th grade students have been analyzing the major factors that allowed for the change over time from small farming communities to large cities. Recently, the 6th graders took part in a debate in which they had to persuade a Neolithic hunter-gatherer to move into their new farming community. This debate provided a vehicle for students to understand the key characteristics of Neolithic farming communities, and Mr. Fellowes loved dressing up as a stone-age man!

7th Grade: Mr. Chaffey and Mrs. Crane have just ended their unit on the Islamic Empires, which culminated in the re-enactment of the 8th century Battle of Tours. The students represented Christian and Islamic forces battling against each for strategic control within the Frankish territory. Presently, the students are beginning the unit on feudal Europe and its lasting social, economic, and political impact on Europe.

8th Grade:  In Mr. Chaffey's class, the 8th grade students are learning about the different political philosophies of some the Enlightenment thinkers such Locke and Montesquieu, as they relate to the separation of powers. They are applying these ideas and establishing links to how our founding fathers were inspired to create the U.S. Constitution. This learning will all come to life when our 8th graders visit Washington D.C. and witness first hand our government at work.

The Prince
9th Grade:  Ms. Peleaux's class is exploring the Renaissance and its far-reaching impact on European societies. Presently the students are reading Machiavelli's The Prince and engaging in heated debates about the role of ethics in leadership. At the same time, students are studying the Reformation and investigating how power structures are questioned and challenged.

10th Grade:History Class 1
In Ms. Peleaux's Advanced Placement European History class, students have recently recreated the Congress of Vienna. The contentious negotiations about the Poland-Saxony issue almost resulted in war, but our British delegates were able to guide the others in a compromise. Students worked closely with a map to justify their choices according to balance of power politics. Students in Contemporary World History class staged a dramatic account of the assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand and pondered ways in which world war may have been averted in 1914.

11th Grade:  Mrs. Miller's class is beginning the second semester with a study of the Civil War. All classes will be writing an evaluation of President Lincoln to determine if he is deserving of his frequent ranking as the best ever president. The course will continue chronologically through industrialization, World War 1, the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression, World War II, Cold War, Civil Rights, and modern US events. This semester, all students will be required to write a formal research paper, using data base research.

12th Grade:  Seniors  will begin the study of Economics with Mrs. Miller in the second semester.  Parent and Guest speaker, Mr. Michael Natelson will be conducting a 3-day seminar on the time-value of money and instruct students on the establishment and use of credit.  Students will study supply, demand, pricing, the stock market, and personal finance. All students will research and track a publically traded company and prepare a formal twenty minute presentation to introduce an innovation for their company.

This exciting unit will result in the top innovation prize to be presented during the Senior Awards in May.
