PARSHAT SHEMOS

Moshe Rabbenu was the quintessential leader. He embodied all the lessons he taught. He did not practice one thing and preach another. Whatever he demanded of others, he performed himself. His integrity was beyond reproach. His caring and devotion were legendary.

The brief summons hanging on the milkman's door bewildered him. He was an honest man who always behaved appropriately. He never cheated, lied or stole anything. He had no idea why he was invited to court but the baker knew.

The baker used to buy butter and cheese from the milkman for his baking. One day he suspected that the lumps of butter that the milkman sold him were under a kilo - even though the milkman insisted that each was exactly one kilo. The baker decided to check out the matter and for a period he consistently weighed every lump of butter that he bought from the milkman. He discovered that they were in fact less than a kilo. Sometimes they were 900grms, sometimes they were 950grms and once one was even 850grms.

The baker was angry "Cheating me," he told his wife angrily, "I am not going to be quiet about it". He went to the local court and complained about the milkman. "We have to prosecute him" said the baker. "We can't let him cheat all the villagers, people trust him!"

That same day the court messenger hung a notice on the milkman's house inviting him to court. The milkman arrived at the court shaking with fear. He had never been to a court house and had never spoken to the Judge. The Judge evoked a sense of fear amongst the villagers.

"I assume you have a very accurate scale in your dairy," said the Judge.

"No your honor, I do not have a scale "said the milkman.

"So how do you weigh the butter? Do you just guess that it is one kilo?" said the Judge.

"No G-d forbid, your honor - I am an honest man; it never occurred to me to do something like that. Very simply I built myself a scale - the kind that needs a weight on one side to balance the butter on the other". The Judge nodded his head, and the milkman continued. "Every morning when I come to weigh the butter for the baker I place a kilo loaf of bread on one side of the scale and this way I know that the butter that I will give to the baker will be exactly one kilo."

So the Judge said, you are telling us that the amount of butter that you give the baker is exactly the weight of the loaf of bread he supplies to you?"

"That is it, exactly it!" said the milkman.  The baker's face fell.

Before we set out to judge others; let's first check that our own house is in order. Don't we sometimes suffer the same failings of which we accuse others?

Let us remember the saying of chazal: - "Straighten yourself first, then straighten others."

Shabbat Shalom!

WHAT'S NEW WITH LUNCH FOR 2010

As part of our continuing effort to provide nutritious meal options, students may now bring kosher meat from home (both for snack and lunch), as long as dairy is not combined with the meal. Blueberry Hill will provide new, mostly organic options for lower school brown bag lunches, starting in February, which will supplement the current lunch program.

Additionally, changes have been made to the online ordering system, which now requires online payment before an order can be honored. Please make sure you complete this portion of the ordering process next week, when we open for February orders.

Questions or concerns should be directed to: lunches@tarbut.com

Siemens Competition
ARC 2010 and ARC 2011 participants might be interested in entering the Siemens Competition next year.

"In conducting their research, students practice bona-fide, "real world" science education, experience the excitement of discovering or building something new, as well as gain personal satisfaction by initiating a project and seeing it through to completion. Any level of showing in a competition (including that of semi-finalist) attracts the attention of admissions staff at prestigious colleges. Competitions are also a way to earn money for college tuition as even modest scholarships can be parlayed into awards from other sources. And unlike loans, scholarship money does not have to be paid back."

For detailed information on how you can participate, become a winner and earn up to $100,000 scholarship check the Siemens Foundation
website.

TARBUT V'TORAH LIBRARY HOUSES SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Special Collection of artifacts from Eleanor Kahn,

Pioneer for Ethiopian Jews

Ethiopia

The Eleanor Kahn collection at the Tarbut V'Torah High School Library tells about the rescue of Jews in Ethiopia, despite the indifference of governments and the media.

The collection chronicles the struggle of a handful of volunteers to rescue thousands of Jews from civil war, famine, and anti-Semitism in Ethiopia.

The Orange County connection came through Howard Lenhoff, a biology professor on sabbatical in Israel in 1973, when he chanced to meet several Ethiopian Jews who, on their own, had managed to reach the Jewish state. From them he learned about a forgotten community of black Jews, the Beta Yisrael, once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and tracing their roots to King Solomon. They had lost contact with the rest of the Jewish world in pre-Talmudic times, but in common with Jews of all colors, they prayed daily to return to the Land of Israel.

In 1974, the American Association for Ethiopian Jews (AAEJ), a grassroots activist group was established. Howard Lenhoff joined AAEJ becoming one of its leaders and Eleanor Kahn joined the all-volunteer staff.  The Eleanor Kahn's collection at the Tarbut Library contains original records of an endless whirl of leafleting, meetings, and rallies, and, later, a series of hazardous missions to Ethiopia itself.
 Ethiopia2

When Israel finally responded to a crisis of starvation among Ethiopian Jews by undertaking an emergency airlift in 1984, some Jewish groups unfortunately divulged the secret operation, causing a premature halt to the airlift.  This interruption left 900 Ethiopian Jewish refugees stranded at the Sudanese border. AAEJ activists lobbied in Washington, persuading Vice-President George Bush to order a U.S. airlift of the refugees. In the years to follow, Israeli rescue missions resumed - including an incredible 14,000 in a single day in May, 1991. Rescue missions would not have occurred had it not been for leaders like Lenoff or volunteers like Kahn, who constantly prodded Israeli, U.S., and American Jewish leaders to take action.

In 2001, Eleanor Kahn decided to entrust the records of this chapter in Jewish history to the Tarbut V'Torah Library for safekeeping, to teach powerful lessons to the next generation. Those seeking ways to raise awareness of the Darfur genocide and other humanitarian causes will find this collection enlightening and useful.

AIPAC LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN ACTION

TVT'S AIPAC Delegation reaped the benefits of the conference they attended in Washington DC this past November. The enthusiasm, knowledge and skills they came away with were evident at the Upper School Student Town Hall this past week. The Delegation shared the importance of taking active outspoken leadership positions on issues that affect the Jewish community, more specifically Israel related issues. They talked about the skills they developed in the areas of persuasive writing, working the political system and connecting with local congressional representatives on issues of concern.
AIPAC Delegate Nicole Babaknia shared with Dr. Hakimi  a recent experience she had with the Junior Statesmen of America Program (JSA.)  At a recent JSA Debate Convention, Nicole was motivated to write a rebuttal argument on the debate topic of "Cutting Financial Aid to Israel." Nicole said that her AIPAC experienced really influenced her to take the time and opportunity to write the rebuttal and make the extra effort to present a speech opposing cutting Israel's funding.

The following Lions participated in the AIPAC Conference last November.
Group Leader: Judith Kirkley
Students: Nicole Babaknia ,Jonathan Ben-Menachem, Max Bidna, Briana Broussard, Charles DeLoach, Erin Monique Gurewitz, Gabriel Heering, Ryan Kassof, Shaina Katibian, Yael Nahum, Gabrielle Natelson, Alex Neiman , Alexander Sable, Shanni Suissa.
