HAPPY THANKSGIVING |
|
We, the American citizenry, are a thankful lot. Our calendar is dotted with days when we express our gratitude to various individuals and entities. On Veteran's Day we thank the members of the Armed Forces for their dedicated service. On Memorial Day we show our gratitude to those courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our liberties and democratic lifestyle. On Labor Day we express our appreciation to the industrious American workforce, the people who keep the wheels of our economy turning. On other selected days we pause to thank different historical individuals who have made valuable contributions to our nation.
And then there is Thanksgiving. The day when we thank G-d for enabling all the above -- and for all else He does for us.
There is no doubt that this great country's historically unprecedented success and prosperity is due to the fact that its Founding Fathers recognized that there is a Supreme Being who provides and cares for every creature. They understood that since G-d sustains and gives life to every being, it follows that every being has certain "unalienable rights" upon which no government can impinge.
These strong morals upon which our republic was founded express themselves to this day in American life. Looking at the dollar bill and seeing "In God We Trust" is a reassurance that as a people we still recognize and acknowledge the Source of all our achievements.
As Jewish citizens of this land, we always look to the Torah for a deeper perspective and additional insight. What light does the Torah shed on the wonderful trait of thankfulness?
Actually, there is one particular mitzvah which is completely devoted to expressing gratitude -- the mitzvah of bikurim (Deuteronomy 26:1-12). During the Temple Era, every farmer was commanded to bring to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem the first fruits which ripened in his orchard. There he would recite a passage thanking G-d for the Land and its bountiful harvest, and the fruit were given to the Kohanim (priests). The Midrash extols the great virtue of this mitzvah; going as far as saying that the Land of Israel was given to the Jews as a reward for the mitzvah of bikurim they would observe after entering the Land!
While the importance of expressing deserved gratitude is self understood, it is difficult to comprehend the special significance of bikurim. Isn't the Jewish day jam-packed with "thank you's"? The first words we utter when waking in the morning express our thanks to G-d for returning our souls to our bodies. Thrice daily during the course of prayer we thank G-d for everything imaginable. Before and after eating we thank G-d for the food. There is even a blessing recited upon exiting the restroom, thanking G-d for normal bodily functions!
With all the thanking which occurs on a daily basis, why the need for a specific mitzvah to emphasize the point? And why the great reward for this particular form of expressing thanks?
The Rebbe points out one obvious difference between bikurim and all the other ways we thank G-d: bikurim involves more than just words -- it requires a commitment; the gratitude must express itself in deeds. Bikurim implies that our thankfulness to G-d cannot remain in the realm of emotions, thoughts, or even speech, but must also move us to action.
While the mitzvah of bikurim in its plainest sense is not practicable today, its lesson is timeless. Our gratitude to G-d must express itself in the actions of our daily life. Giving back the "first of our fruit," the choicest share of the crop, is the only appropriate way to thank G-d for giving us all our fruit.

|
|
We are excited to report that we already have received many gifts at the $5,000, $10,000 and even $25,000+ levels! Every gift is important and we thank everyone who has sent in their commitment.
We have reached the 25% completion point of our Campaign, meaning that 25% of our parents have made their contribution. Our challenge is to reach at least 60% by winter break.
Please help us get there!
Remember, our Campaign takes the place of all the money you were contributing throughout the year for candy, wrapping paper, Family Fun day and more. Please give more than last year if you can - not less!! We also have our Gala in the spring - a rockin', stompin' PARTY this year!! The $2500 level includes two tickets to the Gala and special recognition................
Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday - let us all remember that for which we are grateful ! |

GIVING THANKS WITH STONE SOUP |
|
| Second Grade students enjoyed the story Stone Soup, based on the European fairy tale. In keeping with the theme of cooperation, each child brought a single ingredient so that the entire class could partake of a delicious soup. Mrs. Carpe provided the magic stone!
Writing activities followed with students writing about the steps necessary to follow a recipe. Second grade teachers are planning to cook up even more fun over the next several weeks in both General Studies and Hebrew/Judaica classes. |

The Orange County Department of Education will honor six lower school students at an awards ceremony and reception. Selected from over 5,000 entries, these talented artists were among 350 local students selected for the Junior Art Gallery of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts 2009 exhibition. DID YOU KNOW??? |
|
|
If Moses would have lived today, he would be asking for a PDF file of the 10 commandments he broke, in order to read and think about it at home. With that in mind, our Hebrew department, together with our technology team, is working to make Hebrew more interesting and accessible to our students at home. You can see the outstanding results by visiting the TVT website. Students can now listen to the lessons they practiced in class, study for quizzes and tests, read along with the books and tapes and sing along with the Hebrew songs. This program will help students sharpen and even perfect their individual skills for improved classtime success.
Follow these simple instructions to access our new Hebrew program:
2. Select the "Current Student" tab 3. Enter the general username and password combination for
TVT students 4. Select the "Hebrew curriculum" link 5. Choose the desired Hebrew unit Each unit contains three folders: - Scanned - the book itself is scanned to allow for on-time
completion of all homework assignments
- Reading - Audio formats accompany all books - Songs - All songs in your unit
Don't have a Hebrew keyboard?? Your students can go to www.mikledet.com and type their homework in Hebrew, print it and they are ready for the next day. This program has more fantastic features that we will offer soon. Stay tuned!
Enjoy & Learn! |

ARC GAINS REGIONAL INTEREST |
|
|
TVT was the focus when eleven area schools joined us for an informational session about TVT's 8th Annual Academic Research Conference. Representatives from Sage Hill School, Harbor Day School, St. Margaret Episcopal School,
J Serra Catholic School, San Diego Jewish Academy, Pacific Ridge School, Fairmont Preparatory Academy, The Hebrew Academy, Santa Margarita Catholic High School, St. Mary & All Angels School and The Waldorf School of Orange County all gathered to hear about the history and highlights of the program.
Eighth grade students Roy Elzur, Mattew Cohen and Eitan Jaffe presented their research on "The Physics of Bridge Construction and Collapse, while Justin Sass (10th) expounded on "The Revitalization of the Hebrew Language." Everyone was impressed with the student presenters' level of knowledge and poise while speaking. TVT's decision to open the conference to local students was well received and most schools plan to participate, as both guests and presenters! For additional details, please see the ARC video on YouTube. |

PTSO CORNER |
|

Each year, we ask our parents to make a voluntary donation to purchase Hanukkah and Year End gifts for our Faculty and Staff. The PTSO kindly suggests each family contribute $50 per child or $100 per family for both occasions. You can choose to give more or less; the amount you decide to give is up to you. Even if you have children in all three schools, this one donation lets you say thank you to all of your teachers and amazing support staff. Formerly known as "Happy Everything" in the Middle and Upper Schools, the Faculty-Staff Gift Program gives you peace of mind that two errands this year are done! Please make checks payable to the TVT PTSO and drop them off at the Upper or Lower School front offices.
Thanks! | |
