PARSHAT CHAYEI SERAH

This week's D'var Torah comes to us courtesy of TVT senior student, Aaron Wertheimer.  It has been edited for length.

"Leap, and the net will appear."  I found this Zen saying while searching for the modern relevance of this week's Parshat. Chayei Sarah actually begins with the end of Sarah's life, which spans 127 years.  Abraham is old at this point and is reaching the end of his years.  After the loss of Sarah, his last wish before he passes away is for his best servant, Eliezer, find a wife for his son, Isaac.

Eliezer goes out with a large group of camels to the city of Nahor in search of a wife for Abraham's son.  He prays to God to grant him the "good fortune" of a woman who is hospitable and will offer water to him and his camels.  Eliezer's prayer is answered when Rebekah appears and grants Eliezer's request for him and his camels to come to stay with her family.  Eliezer, believing that Rebekah is the right woman for Isaac, finally asks the family for their approval for the marriage.  The family deliberates, and consults their daughter who, in the end, willingly agrees to the marriage.  Eliezer gives many gifts to the family, and establishes cordial relations with everyone before leaving.  He takes Rebekah and her maids back to Abraham's house, and eventually, Isaac marries Rebekah. The parashat concludes with Abraham's death at age 175.He dies happy, knowing his son has married a good woman.

So, why should we care that Rebekah marries Isaac?  Both Rebekah's willingness and her family's agreement to allow their daughter to go with Eliezer, knowing nothing about the man she was about to marry, was surprising to me.

I realized that Rebekah must have had lot faith in herself and her family.  She teaches us just how important it is, at times, to trust ourselves and those who love us.  Marrying a man she never met, and shaping her life based on Eliezer's word must have been one of the scariest decisions Rebekah would ever have to make in her life.

It reminded me of the time when I moved from Michigan to California: I had no idea who I would meet or how I would fare, but the only thing I could do was hope for the best, take the leap and trust that the net would appear.  I ended up landing in a very secure net, at Tarbut V' Torah, where I have received a stellar education and made a lot of great friends.

So in fact, Rebekah's actions DO affect all of us.  Often times our worst moments come from not leaping when we should! On the contrary, sometimes our best moments have come when we have taken those chances and just hoped for the best.

Freshmen: You are at the beginning of your high school career, your academics are finally counting towards your admittance to college.  It's a long journey, but you'll have to trust that it's worth your while to work hard and enjoy it.

Sophomores: You are probably working towards getting your license, another huge leap into the great unknown.  Remember, with great power comes great responsibility!

Juniors: this year, grades are of the utmost importance, the SAT and ACT add to the even longer list of work and responsibilities and all of the people around you who love and want the best for you are trying to guide you without pushing too hard.  Hang in!

And finally, Seniors: every week as another D'var Torah rolls by, we are one step closer to the next stage of our lives.  As Mr. Weissman once said, "The world outside probably looks a lot more interesting than the one in here at TVT, right now."  Whether we are applying to schools and programs that are thousands of miles away, or close to home, our attitude towards our new journey will determine the outcome.

Part of the beauty of the future is that we do not know what's in store for us.  Like Rebekah, we must push ourselves to take the leap... and "the net will appear."  We have been blessed with a lot of net, but with faith in ourselves and those who love us and with our eyes wide open, we will land on our feet!

For all of us at TVT, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors alike, we must live life and love every minute of it. The glass is always half full, so drink up.  Cheers...L'Chayim... Here's to the future!

1ST GRADE TECHNOLOGY DISCOVERY

Nathan
By Nathan Mooore (1st grade)

Much to their delight, Mrs. Robin Bleiweiss has introduced her 1st grade class to a new graphics software called "Wordle" that displays text in "word clouds," which emphasizes words that occur most often. Ms. Bleiweiss has found that spelling words in different colors and sizes helps her students remember the words better, thereby mastering spelling patterns with greater alacrity. The program is suitable for all ages: http://www.wordle.net.

5TH GRADE FLIES HIGH AT ASTRO CAMP

Astro Camp2

For the 13th consecutive year, TVT's 5th graders spent 3 days and two nights at Astro Camp, a science oriented camp in Idyllwild, California. Students were divided into four groups and took a variety of indoor and outdoor courses that strengthen and enhance the 5th grade science curriculum such as Atmosphere and Gases, exploring the night sky with telescopes, and building and launching bottle rockets.

Astro Jump
Oh yes, the 5th graders also maintained TVT tradition by climbing up a 35 foot power pole and leaping off to hit a suspended tetherball.

RABBI AND SCHOLAR RABBI MARVIN TOKAYER VISITS TVT
"These are some of my heroes I want to tell you about and I hope they become your heroes as well....."

Last week, in partnership with the Community Scholar's Program, the Middle and Upper School students and faculty had the pleasure of taking Rabbi Marvin Tokayer's journey to the Far East as the visiting scholar regaled us with fascinating and true stories about the Jews of the Eastern World.  Rabbi Tokayer served as a United States Air Force Chaplain in Japan. After his Air Force discharge he served for eight years as the rabbi for the Jewish Community of Japan. His curiosity and research took him to a world about which little is known and he shared that world with our students this past week.

 Rabbi Tokayer
Rabbi Marvin Tokayer speaking to TVT Students

Marcus Samuel, Nathan Goodworth and Chiune Sugihara are only a few of the many heroes that Rabbi Tokayer spoke about this week. The following is a snapshot of what Rabbi Tokayer shared about the lives of these amazing people.

Marcus Samuel had his start as a Jewish juvenile delinquent in London. His life's journey brought him to Japan where he started the Shell Oil Co. Nathan Goodworth was an 18 year old Dutch Jew who found himself in Lithuania trying to escape the Nazis. He was able to obtain a visa to Japan. Instead of taking the visa and running, Nathan put his life on the line to help many of his friends obtain visas as well. In Nazi occupied Lithuania, Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat issued thousands of transit visas for Jews to leave Lithuania. At great risk to himself and his family he saved the lives of thousands of Jews. Rabbi Tokayer had the opportunity to meet Sugihara. He asked him why he issued the visas even after he received orders stating otherwise. He responded "in our life we all have the opportunity to do the right thing. That is why I did it, because it was the right thing." In his book, The Fugu Plan, Rabbi Tokayer tells the whole story of the Japanese plan to save the Jews of Europe from the Holocaust.
