PARSHAT LECH LECHA

In Parshat Lech Lecha, among the blessings that Avraham was to receive for leaving all that he had was the blessing that he himself should be a blessing (12:2). How does one become a blessing? Furthermore, Rashi comments that G-d promised Avraham that although he would be identified with Yitzchak and Yakov, any such blessings would end with Avraham's name at its conclusion. If the sages are correct that Yitzchak and Yakov reached higher levels than Avraham, what made him so special that any blessing would end with him?

Rav Moshe Feinstein explains that Avraham merited greater distinction because he was the first to establish faith in G-d. Although those after him reached greater heights, Avraham's accomplishments were more worthy. Maybe this can explain how Avraham himself became the blessing: Taking initiative and starting something you believe is important for society and is a blessing on its own, because it lays the framework upon which others can build!

G-d promised Avraham, and in turn promised us, that, if we become leaders and initiators, our initial efforts will never be forgotten and we will always be remembered as a blessing!

AN INSPIRING GIFT OF TZEDAKAH

Chrissa Beilby (1st Grade) donated the entire contents of her tzedakah box, $369.87 to TVT!

She earned the money completely on her own by recycling aluminum cans and plastic bottles. According to Chrissa,
"I decided to give the money in my tzedakah box to TVT
because it's the bestest school in the world!"

      Chrissa

KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM INVOLVES WHOLE CHILD

"Kindergarteners, Kindergarteners, what did you see?"
"We saw starfish, sea urchins, sea anemones and hermit crabs as beautiful as can be."

Sandy Bruss reports:
What a fantastic fieldtrip we had at the Ocean Institute! The children were like sponges soaking up all the information. The docents were so impressed with our children. Of course, they loved meeting the hermit crab's friends. (Which was a wonderful extension to the book, A House for Hermit Crab , that we have been focusing on in our class projects.) They had the opportunity to touch the sea stars, sea urchins, anemones and sea cucumbers. A fascinating movie showing how the hermit crabs seek out larger shells captivated their interest. They also held hermit crabs, sorted shells, and manipulated an underwater camera, magnifying crabs.

When we returned from our fieldtrip, we did a class dictated story, where the children recalled facts about their experience.

The children are now swimming through a multitude of ocean-related projects while listening to "ocean" music,  singing songs about "Baby Beluga", and learning "fabulous, fishy facts". We will be using our fieldtrip real-life experience as a springboard to becoming authors and illustrators. The children have dictated their discoveries to our diligent scribes and they will be working on their books this coming week. They stenciled different sea creatures to color as a cover design.

We are having fun floating in a new theme!

DID YOU KNOW???

9th GRADE SHABBATON
Thanks to a gift from a very generous anonymous donor, our entire 9th grade class has been given the opportunity to participate in the Bureau of Jewish Education's Talit Program at no cost to their families.

This past weekend the students attended the first of three Shabbatonim (retreats) - each focusing on different Jewish themes through highly interactive experiential programming. When they returned they enthusiastically reported ...
"The Talit counselors were great".
"The hikes were amazing and life changing".
"The food was delicious".
"I met a lot of new friends".
"I learned a lot about wilderness".
"Great Jewish integration".
"Brought back good memories of my camp experiences".
"Tefilah was fun".
"Intense cabin time experiences".
"Great way to make Jewish friends".
"The Friday night services were very meaningful".

Good friends, good food and good hikes in a Jewish environment. . . it doesn't get much better then that!

A VISITING SOFER (SCRIBE)
With a great deal of humor, Rabbi Moshe Druin, Sofer (and stand-up comedian!) shared the important work of a Sofer (scribe) with the TVT Middle Schoolers. He brought along and explained the interesting tools that are used to write a Torah scroll including a pen made from the feather of turkey, special ink and parchment.  The Rabbi also pointed out interesting verses in the Torah scroll that are written in very specific and deliberate ways.

Rabbi Druin ended his presentation by proposing this thoughtful question to the students; "Why does the Torah begin with the Hebrew letter Beit (Beresheet barah Elohim...) instead of Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet?" The students were stumped. The Rabbi suggested the following possible interpretation - "if the Torah started with the letter Aleph, it would make sense and there would be no reason to question that. Since the Torah starts with the letter Beit, there is a curiosity about that, which in turn, encourages more questions...and", he said, "the study of Torah should encourage lots and lots of questions".

DON'T FORGET - SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK ONE HOUR

On Sunday, November 1st, we return to Standard Time by moving our clocks back one hour at 2 am.

We return to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2 am.

You can read some interesting facts about Daylight Savings Time below or check out the website Daylight Savings Time

Draft Status, Vietnam War
A man, born just after 12:00 a.m. DST, circumvented the Vietnam War draft by using a daylight saving time loophole. When drafted, he argued that standard time, not DST, was the official time for recording births in his state of Delaware in the year of his birth. Thus, under official standard time he was actually born on the previous day--and that day had a much higher draft lottery number, allowing him to avoid the draft.

Bombing Thwarted
In September 1999, the West Bank was on Daylight Saving Time while Israel had just switched back to standard time. West Bank terrorists prepared time bombs and smuggled them to their Israeli counterparts, who misunderstood the time on the bombs. As the bombs were being planted, they exploded--one hour too early--killing three terrorists instead of the intended victims--two busloads of people.
