PARSHAT NOACH

The Flood was history. The era of robbery, greed, and corruption was washed away by its powerful waves. Peace and tranquility reigned. The entire world was now united -- against the Almighty.

The world community decided that in the interest of harmony they would join forces and build a colossal tower to reach to the heavens. Then they would ascend the tower and do battle with G-d Himself. It was an ambitious dream, but they were united and determined.

Hashem, however, had other plans. The Torah tells us that He convened the same tribunal He consulted with in creating man and this time decided that He would not destroy the builders. He would confuse them. He changed their languages so they were not able to communicate. One man would ask for a hammer and receive a nail, a saw, or a blank stare. Enraged, the requestor would then argue with and even strike his fellow builder who was impeding progress. Eventually a small civil war erupted on the construction site. The men dispersed and the construction project was eternally halted. And seventy distinct nations ultimately emerged.

It is puzzling: how does a problem such as lack of communication stop a lofty project of such tremendous scope? Didn't the French and British jointly finish the Channel, the tunnel that connects the two countries, under the English Channel?

I once asked my rebbe, Reb Mendel Kaplan, who after escaping from the Nazi inferno lived in Shanghai, China for nearly five years, how he was able to communicate with the Chinese. He held up a dollar. "Everybody understands this language," he said.

Don't people of different languages manage to communicate when they want to realize a noteworthy mission? Why was there no way to gather the forces, create new communication techniques, and continue the project?

A college professor was known to give difficult tests yet he had a very lenient policy. If a student missed the exam he could take a make-up test the next day. The make-up, however, was always the same test the professor had given the day prior.

15 minutes before the final exam, of a particularly difficult semester, the professor received a phone call. The four voices crowding the phone booth sounded desperate.
"Professor, we were on our way to take your final and we got a flat tire. Please let us take a make-up exam tomorrow." "Certainly," the professor responded.

The next day the four young men walked in feeling quite smug. They had reviewed the entire final with a friend who had taken it the day before. The professor seated the four students in different corners of the room. He placed a single sheet of paper in front of each one and stated crisply.

"Today's make-up exam entails just one question. I would like you young men, each in his own way, to write down for me..." he looked at the young men and smiled knowingly -- "which tire was flat?"

When the goal entails truth and true good for mankind, when the goals are harmonious with the concepts that transcend culture, language, custom, or vogue, then nothing can impede success.

But when selfishness rules and individual glory and gratification is the motivation, then the simplest problem can cause total disunity, contempt, and ultimately failure.

When our common goals are enveloped in common good, then we can unite under the most difficult of circumstances. However, if our motivations are selfish, the slightest impediment will leave our entire project and mission flat.

As flat as the tire of Babel. by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

TVT LIONS GO TO THE STAPLES CENTER

staples 2
TVT Lions with their coaches and fans at the Staples Center

Tuesday afternoon our TVT Lions Basketball team played
Shalhevet High School at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was a thrilling experience for all who attended.  Over 100 TVT friends, family, students and staff made the trek to Los Angeles.
The Clippers photographer took some great pictures, a few of
which we have shared with you here.

Below are some excerpts from our reporters from TVT Today
and the Lions' Pride newspaper:
Tarbut V'Torah boys varsity basketball team played an
awesome game. The Lions beat the Shalhevet FireHawks
at the Staples Center on October 20, 2009. The school
provided a bus for the middle and upper school students to
be able to attend the game and cheer for their team at this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Though TVT was provoked by the very spirited and hopeful
Shalhevet fans, our Lions didn't even take notice as they easily
defeated the FireHawks. After the student games, students from
all of the Jewish Schools present - TVT, Shalhevet, Valley Torah High School, and YULA sat in the balcony at the Staples Center
and enjoyed each other's company while they waited for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Maccabi Tel-Aviv Electra game to begin.
In an exciting game, the Clippers won, 111-98, but the Maccabi
Tel-Aviv team went home winners, anyway. They raised a lot of
of money for the Migdal Ohr orphange in Israel.

It was one incredible and thrillling opportunity for our team to play
in the Staples Center, with their family and friends there to cheer
them on, all while doing a mitzvah!  We are proud.

DID YOU KNOW?

TVT Middle and Upper School students have amazing opportunities to participate in cutting edge Jewish Programs on a national level. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be sharing with you more details about the AIPAC Student Leadership Conference in Washington DC and the Moot Beit Din (Jewish Court Debate), two programs in which our students will be participating.

A third program Facing History and Ourselves, is a national project to which we applied and were accepted. The overall goal of the Facing History Program is to engage students in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

The following are some examples of how the program's material and methodologies are already being used at TVT:

English Department Chair, Mr. Daniel Epstein, has integrated pieces of the unit on Individual and Society into his initial unit on the book "On the Color Line."  Mr. Epstein has used the video clip "The Lunch Date" and dealt with questions of personal identity formation and the perception of the other.  History Faculty member, Mr.Simon Fellowes, has explored the factors that lead to identity formation in his 9th grade World History.  His classes have explored the idea of dual identities and loyalties in looking at the historical figure of Arminius during the Roman Empire.

Jewish Studies Faculty member, Mr. Lee Weissman, created a study guide and used the movie the "Quarrel" to teach his students about ethical behavior and reconciliation.  Mr. Damian Zoppo who is teaching a course on Genocide has completed a unit on identity formation and the Armenian Genocide. We are pleased to share that this Genocide course recently received UC approval. Additionally, Mr. Zoppo wrote a unit for the middle school about identity formation.

The students' comments and responses to this material have been very positive. There are plans in the works to incorporate more of this important material into our program and to create opportunities for the parents and community members to partake in Facing History educational opportunities as well.

TVT ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

 Flag Football
MS FLAG FOOTBALL: Kol HaKavod to the Lions, celebrating their first victory of the season (score). Next up, Anaheim Hills this Monday at 3:15pm.

US VOLLEYBALL: Sports Lion
Once again the Lady Lion's played a great game, falling just short of victory. This time they were cheered on by our middle school students and other participants of this year's Sports Bash. Catch Girls Volleyball next Monday at 3:15 as they take on Anaheim Hills.

CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT

          Shakeout
TVT joined thousands of California business and schools in observing the California Shakeout, the world's largest earthquake drill.

TVT students were particularly fortunate in that, aside from practicing lifesaving emergency evacuation procedures, they also received an orientation about the school's store of emergency supplies and a live demonstration of the proper technique for using a fire extinguisher.

With Shalom at the helm, our administrators, faculty and staff performed their assigned tasks with calm and ease while the students paid careful attention as we all participated in this important and necessary drill.
