PARSHAT BEREISHIT |
|
Every Friday at TVT, during Kabbalat Shabbat, one of our students in the senior class addresses the entire Middle and Upper School. Their assignment from the Judaic Studies Department is the following: Make this week's Parsha interesting and relevant. This year, the students have been overwhelming us week after week with their understanding and insight. Before they get away, I thought all of you would enjoy a glimpse of our soon -to- be graduates. This week, it was Einav Silverstein's turn.
This week, synagogues all over the world are reading the very first parasha in the Torah-Bereishit. I'm positive that most of you are familiar with the beginning of this parasha: "Bereishit Bara Elohim...". I'm sure you're all familiar with the story that God created the world in seven days, so I'm not going to bore you with the details of what he created on each day, but I will assure you of this: Even though, by the end of the sixth day, God concludes "It was good", Creation was by no means over.
The baton was merely passed to Man. The very first task God gives Adam is to name every animal. This may not seem like such a big deal, but names carry an important significance in Judaism. Names are not just a random collection of letters and sounds, but they convey the essence of the thing being named. Jewish mysticism teaches that the Hebrew letters are manifestations of God's energy, so a being's name is sort of like its DNA code. In this light, the fact that Adam has the power to name the animals is significant: He gets to string together different aspects of God's energy and impart them into the animal he is naming. When he sees the counterpart that God has created for him in Eve, he calls her "isha". In naming Eve, Adam adds the divine letter "hey" to his own identity: "Ish". The fact that a fragment of God could come rolling out of his mouth to become part of human identity shows that we, as mankind, have an awesome and potent power literally at the tip of our tongues.
Like all powers, our power with words comes with great responsibility, and we need to be exceedingly careful about how we use it. To see just how dangerous our words can be, we turn to the story of Eve and the Tree of Knowledge. When God gives the famous commandment not to eat from the tree of knowledge, he says: "Of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it, for on the day that you eat thereof, you shall surely die." When the serpent later questions Eve about God's instructions, she tells him "God said, 'You shall not eat of it, and you shall not touch it, lest you die.'". Wait a minute. Where exactly did this "you shall not touch it" part come from? God certainly didn't include this stipulation in his initial instructions. And though this addition to God's words may seem innocuous at first, Eve's abuse of words has far-reaching consequences. Rashi tells us that, in his attempt to tempt Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, the serpent pushed her into the tree. "See?" he told her. "You touched the tree, and no bolt of lightning came to strike you down." Seeing that this was true, Eve had no reason to fear breaking the other half of this commandment, and willingly eats the fruit. We all know what happens next: Adam and Eve are punished and kicked out of the Garden of Eden. Eve's careless disregard for the tongue's power has terrible consequences. In the thirteen years I've been at this school, I've identified one trait that is common to most (if not all) of my fellow Tarbutians: we are NOT afraid to speak our minds. This is a great attribute. Really, it is. But, just like automobiles and atomic bombs, we have to use it responsibly. I know that many of us are facing unbelievable stress: seniors have college apps, juniors have standardized testing, and everyone has tons of homework and difficult classes to get through. Be very careful not to let your power to create turn into the power to destroy. Don't fall into the same trap as Eve: the moment you tell yourself "I can't do it" or "I'm going to fail", your own words set you up for failure. Instead, use your words to create. Let yourself know "you can do it!" As Adam has shown us, we have the power to shape the world within us and around us. Speak up for an issue you are passionate about, and help create a solution. Give a friend encouraging advice, and help build them up as a human being.
Thank you and Shabbat Shalom.

PERFORMANCE ART DEBUT |
|
One of TVT's newest faculty members, Mrs. Leah Tramer, helped the Middle and Upper School usher in the New Year in unique and creative manner. The 3D art class created two live performance art pieces, one for Rosh Hashana and one for Sukkot.
The live performance art piece for Rosh Hashana, revolved around the theme of ushering in a peaceful New Year. The students built a 12 x12 ft. "gate of peace" out of bamboo and flowers.
In the mode of "live performance" the students recreated the gate and built it in front of the live student audience. Israeli music played in the background while the students recited the brachot for Rosh Hashana and eating the first fruits of the season. For Sukkot the students built another structure that revolved around the theme of the 3 species Lula, Hadas and Arava) that are part of the Lulav and the Etrog. This live performance piece also included music and the Hebrew description of the 4 species as well as the recitation of the Brachot for Sukkot. Each person present at this live performance received a branch of Arava so that they could carry the feel and smell of the Arava with them after the performance was over.
The students in the 3D Art Class had the opportunity to facilitate several" live performances" in front of the entire middle and upper school community. Their fellow students showed a great appreciation for the amazing creative efforts of this class. We wish a Kol HaKavod to the members of the class who did such a great job with this new art form. They are Seth Winkler(10th), Sahar Elbaz (10th), Tom Paz (10th) and Saul Brenner Kaplan (10th). |

OUR PARENT AMBASSADORS HELP US SHINE |
|
TVT has once again assembled and trained an enthusiastic and articulate team of "Parent Ambassadors" for the 2009-2010 school year. Participants were selected based on their deep commitment to TVT and to Jewish education and will help support the Admissions Office with the school's recruitment and retention activities. Typical activities include participating in school tours, making follow-up calls, conducting parlor meetings, and acting as guides during open houses. Parents can provide perspective on why they chose TVT and give personal anecdotes. Research has shown that prospective parents are highly influenced in their decision about choosing a school after speaking with parents of children at that school. In this manner, they play an invaluable role that could never be performed solely by the Director of Admission. If you are interested in becoming a TVT Ambassador, please contact Ms. Wendy Leberman in the Admissions Office (extension 1102 or wleberman@tarbut.com). |

DID YOU KNOW? |
|
The Middle and Upper School Jewish Studies teachers did it again - they combined the study of serious Jewish text with engaging hands-on experiential learning opportunities around the holiday of Sukkot. The students decorated the TVT Sukkah, an activity that never gets old, even for adults. They fulfilled the Mitzvah of " Lashev b'Sukkah", the opportunity to sit, study and eat in the Sukkah. Ms. Jill Jacobs' 6th grade class read from the book of Leviticus about Sukkot and discovered one very important unanswered question- How to actually build the Sukkah? Ms. Jacobs steered her students to the study of a Mishnah text that answered this question. This lesson afforded Ms. Jacobs the opportunity to teach the importance of Rabbinic texts in helping Jews fulfill precepts found in Torah. Rabbi Leah Lewis had some wonderful discussions with her classes as they delved into the Book of Kohelet/Ecclesiastes, which is traditionally read on the eighth day of Sukkot. The students explored the somber mature themes of Kohelet (There is nothing new under the sun, Possessions and pleasures are of any lasting consequence.) They explored the juxtaposition of the somberness of Kohelet with the joyous nature of Sukkot. Mr. Lee Weissman extended himself by hosting students in his own Sukkah during the week of Chol HaMoed. The students who were able to attend had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Sukkot in this intimate setting, not to mention the goodies Mrs. Weissman prepared for them. Ms Nelli Arbiv devoted a unit of study to Sukkot. Part one of the unit explored the custom of inviting Ushpizin, guests, to the Sukkah. They learned that this is a mystical custom based on inviting our forefathers and foremothers into our Sukkah and continuing to learn lessons from their lives. The students spoke with their parents about people who were influential in their lives and who they would want to invite in as guest. One parent shared that she was moved to tears as she told her daughter that she would invite her mom, the student's Bubbe, who passed away 4 years ago, as a guest to share her wisdom about life and her love of Judaism with her grandchildren. Part two and three of the unit included in depth studies about the laws of building a Kosher Sukkah and the actual building of a mini Sukkah, according to Halakah (Jewish Law), in class. The students were allowed to bring in any types of "building" materials. Most students chose to bring "edible" materials. If you were fortunate to happen upon Ms. Arbiv's class, you would have been in for a real "treat". Not only would you have seen some students using brown licorice strips as Schach/palm fronds, you might have been lucky enough to taste some of the left over "building" material as well! |
