SUKKOT

Sukkot is referred to in our liturgy as "the time of our happiness". How do we celebrate? We leave our lovely homes and sit exposed to the elements in little boxes. We are commanded by the Torah; "and you should rejoice with your holiday and be only happy!"

Maybe the story is not so simplistic and the joke not so (as we say in yiddish) "farfetched". It's very easy to be focused on what's missing in life; to give special recognition to the cruel and heartless; to the unfinished business of history and history of business. Even more so these days we need a way to regain a sense of optimism. How about 7 days in "a happiness box" to see what's right in G-d's world. Hearing clearly the commandment as it is pronounced is a critical point. No where does it say, "kvetch"!

We all know how we can feel sometimes and how it creates a contagion of negativity. Therefore we hung two signs in our sukkah. One upon entering reads, "You are entering a no kvetching zone". The other posted prominently reads, "Don't even think of kvetching in the sukkah!" The Vilna Gaon called this the hardest mitzvah in the Torah to fulfill. So, don't expect it to happen with a simple story, a bad joke, by reciting an imperative verse, or by hanging a humorous sign, but it sure is a good beginning.                     by Rabbi Label Lam

COLLEGE COUNSELING

It is not surprising that TVT was the only school on the West Coast to receive the ConnectEDU Award for Excellence in College Counseling - just look at the number of reps who have come, or will be coming, to recruit our kids (more are being added every week!):

PTSO CORNER

We hope you have enjoyed the first month of school.
Beginning this week, the PTSO will proudly have a spot in the weekly Shabbat Shalom email.  This week's PTSO Corner includes information on PTSO Meetings, Volunteer Opportunities and Mitzvah Mentions.  Starting next week, look for information specific to each school as well as TVT PTSO programs.

PTSO Meetings
Our monthly PTSO meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  We encourage all parents to come join us at our next PTSO Meeting to be held on Wednesday, October 14th @ 8:10 am in the LS MPR.   Minutes from the PTSO meetings can be found in the Shabbat Shalom email following the month's meeting.

Volunteer Opportunities

TVT Scrip Program

Michael Halpern, Director of Advancement, is looking for a few organized parents to coordinate the school's Scrip Program.  Volunteers will place and organize the schools monthly Scrip orders.  It's an easy way to help and get involved.  Please contact Michael Halpern ([email protected]) for more information.

Mitzvah Mentions
Everyone who placed a Holiday Challah Order - Thank you for your understanding and patience while you waited for the challah to be delivered!
Gloria Dror - For doing such an amazing job coordinating the Challah orders.

SPECIAL INVITATION TO TVT FAMILIES

Dr. Carl Taswell, father of Coby Taswell (Grade 6), will be speaking on Scientific Computing for Imaging of Gene-Brain-Behavior, at UC Irvine (RH 306) this Monday, October 5th, at 4pm. He welcomes any interested TVT students and their parents. An abstract is listed below. For more information, contact Ms. Alla Korinevskaya, Advanced Learners Program Coordinator: [email protected]

Abstract
:
How do we best visualize and understand the neural pathways and activity sites of the brain and their relation to genes and behavior? Building a brain imaging and informatics system that effectively serves the goal of answering this question remains an important scientific computing challenge that requires integration of all numeric and non-numeric approaches to computing. The presentation will discuss various examples ranging from mathematical image processing for computer aided diagnosis to non-numeric symbolic processing in data grid systems for clinical imaging trials. Such methods and tools must be integrated into a future scientific computing system for brain imaging that provides and utilizes a comprehensive array of computing components addressing all major aspects of computational imaging, integrating the necessary mathematics, statistics, numeric-based AI, semantic-based AI, software engineering (user interfaces), and systems engineering (networks).

           HONORED HUMANITARIAN RETURNS TO

                              ORANGE COUNTY

                             Ruth Messinger
When renowned humanitarian Ruth Messinger gave a stirring address at TVT's graduation ceremony several years ago, she had no idea she was starting a trend. Yet TVT has taken her message to heart, starting clubs such as the O Ambassadors and SOS Children's Village, which strive to achieve repair the world, Tikkun olam, in a meaningful way.

Thus, we are delighted to report that Ms. Messinger will be returning to Orange County, presenting an intensely personal look at the root causes of global hunger and poverty, Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 7:30pm at Temple Beth Shalom.

As president of the American Jewish World Service, Ms. Messinger has had a direct hand in establishing their summer high school programs, which provide 1-3 week service opportunities in various nations. The event is free of charge and open to the community. More information is available at www.tbsoc.com/events
