PARSHAT OF THE WEEK - KI TAVO

Everyone knows that Adam and Eve made a bad mistake in the Garden of Eden. But was their primary mistake eating from the fruit? No. A look at the verses (Genesis 3:8-13) reveals something much deeper:
"[After eating, Adam and Eve] hid themselves from God among the trees of the Garden. God called to Adam and said: "Where are you?"
"I heard Your voice in the Garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."
God asked: "Who told you that you are naked? Did you eat from the tree which I commanded you not to eat?"
Adam replied: "The woman that you gave to be with me - she gave me to eat from the tree."
So God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?"
The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
Rashi explains the sequence: God obviously knows what Adam has done, yet He does not attack with an accusation. Rather, God strikes up a conversation, asking in a gentle, non-threatening way: "Where are you?" He gives Adam a chance to admit his mistake, and express regret.
Instead Adam hides and blames it all on Eve. Eve passes responsibility off to the snake. Everyone claims they did nothing wrong!
That was their worst mistake.
God knows we're not perfect - He's the one who created us this way! But He does expect us to take responsibility for our actions and admit when we've done wrong. Because without doing so, there is no hope to correct it in the future.
This lesson can be applied to raising children. Imagine walking into the kitchen to find your child up on the counter and reaching his hand into the cookie jar. Don't accuse, don't attack, and don't back him into a corner. The deed of snatching cookies is already done; the only question that remains is how he will deal with the mistake. Try a casual, "Hey, what's goin' on with the cookies?" This gives him a chance to state the truth without feeling threatened.
Why is it that so many people have trouble admitting when they're wrong?
One possible reason is that without an absolute standard of right and wrong, there may be no compelling reason to admit wrongdoing. Newsweek magazine reports:
In Western society, aversion to apology is a widespread malady. Whether somebody cuts another off in traffic, or destroys a marriage, admitting guilt is out of vogue. In fact, pop psychology has done all it can to remove the whole concept of "guilt" from our lexicon. It's much easier to rationalize our mistakes away. And it's unhealthy to feel guilt, they say. "Suppress it!"
On one level, this suppression is unhealthy. When we refuse to admit, it is depressing and paralyzing. The regret stays inside and festers.
On another level, this suppression is downright dangerous. When one repeats an inappropriate act, he will eventually come to rationalize it as proper. The Nazi Himmler wrote that in his own personal experience with killing Jews, the turning point came when he was able to fall asleep at night without any guilt. He knew then that he'd crossed the point of no return.
This week's Parsha provides an important tool for admitting our mistakes:
The Torah is telling us that to evaluate our spiritual status properly, the key ingredient is to speak it out loud.  i.e. articulate verbally where we have succeeded and where we have failed.
This lesson is crucial as we approach the High Holidays, the time when we stand in front of the mirror and see the stark reality of who we are. Maimonides explains:
In Judaism, confession is a totally private matter, between you and God. In fact, the Hebrew word for confession - li-heet-vadot - is the "reflexive" form which connotes acting upon oneself. Though we speak to God, He knows the truth already.
The problem is when we're not willing to admit the truth to ourselves. As the prophet Jeremiah says, "God will judge us when we say 'I didn't sin.'"
Incredibly, the incident of Adam and Eve occurred on the very first Rosh Hashana, the day that humanity was born. Rosh Hashana is thus the most opportune day to repair that mistake.
May these holidays be a time of spiritual growth for us all.

DREAMING OF COLLEGE? TVT'S NEW DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE IS HERE TO ENSURE YOU GET THERE!

               Clint Davis

TVT is thrilled to announce the promotion of Mr. Clint Davis to Director of College Counseling.  After more than a decade of working in the college counseling office at Tarbut V'Torah, in the classroom, and on the athletic field, it is truly our gain to have Clint as the Director of what is such a dynamic and flourishing counseling program.  Mr. Davis has immediately transformed the college counseling department by creating a College Counseling Institute this summer for our students.  Thanks to this program, many of our seniors are already off and running with their college applications as a result of this institute which included videotaped mock interviews, sessions with the English faculty on essay writing and self-reflection for our students.  And, as though these activities haven't kept our new College Counseling Director busy enough, he also found time to impress his colleagues, earning an invitation to join the selective "The Taste of the Triangle" Conference. Designed for an elite group, this program brings together the nation's top 45 high school counselors, while offering participants an insider look at the admissions programs for three highly respected universities: Carnegie Mellon, Case Western and Allegheny College.

Aiding Mr. Davis in his endeavors, the College Counseling Assistant, Mrs. Pam Samuels, has expertise not only from her years working in the department, but also from her years as a Tarbut parent. TVT's Registrar, Mrs. Grace Rios rounds out the College Counseling Office with over 8 years experience at TVT.  Kol HaKovod to Mr. Davis and his team!

UPPER SCHOOL TEACHER HONORED BY AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY

                   Mr. Lincoln

You may recall the popular video produced last year by upper school Physics Teacher, Mr James Lincoln. The YouTube video, "Smoke Rings, Mushroom Clouds and Vortexes,"  which has been viewed
over 2,000 times on YouTube alone, explained the mechanics of a vortex air canon using innovative arsenal of toys and was recently
selected as the Grand Prize Winner  of the PhysicsCentral's ToyBox Physics Video Contest, garnering a $1,000 cash prize, a phenomenal trophy made of toys, and endless bragging rights. The full video can be seen here: http://www.physicscentral.com/experiment/contests/toybox/index.cfm. The American Physical Society article featuring Mr. Lincoln is here: http://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/200908/videocontest.cfm.

SURPRISE GREETS TVT LIONS

Mr. Anthony Perez has a hidden talent up his sleeve, which was only revealed when TVT's athletic teams came back to campus at the start of school. TVT's esteemed Facilities Director painted an impressive Lion mural to guard the gym's Team Room. "This is something I usually do for close friends and family," Mr. Perez said, "but after nine years TVT has become family, too." Hopefully this Lion, and the goodwill behind it, will be just the thing to push TVT to a CIF victory in 2009-10!

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Advancement Department is looking for talented student artists to design a Lion-themed thermometer for their upcoming Annual Campaign. Initial draft due Thursday, September 10, 2009 to the Upper School office.  Five finalists will be selected and notified by September 15. BACK TO SCHOOL BASICS:

                   WASTE-FREE LUNCH
We can accomplish great acts of Tikkun Olam by taking even the smallest of steps together. This year, consider something as simple as reusable lunch boxes, available at the TVT Spirit Shop (open Monday and Friday before school and online at http://www.tarbutstore.com).
According to the EPA, each child who brings a brown-bag lunch to school every day will generate 67 pounds of waste by the end of the school year.  And wastefreelunches.org notes that a disposable lunch composed of pre-packaged, single-use foods costs $4.02 per day, versus $2.65 for a waste-free lunch packed in reusable containers.   That translates to a savings of about $246.60 per child per year.

WE NEED YOU TO "MEET THE SCIENTIST"

Each year the most advanced and motivated middle and upper school students participate in the TVT Annual Academic Research Conference. Students may choose from any discipline including Math, Science, English, Social studies, Computer Science, Hebrew, Judaica, etc. The students present their research to fellow students, members of the community and a panel of judges. Winners receive monetary and other rewards and may qualify to enter their research paper at the State, National or International conferences, competitions and Science Fairs.

To jump start the 8th Annual Research Conference, we will be hosting the Meet a Scientist Program on Thursday, October 1st, 6:30 - 8:00!

This unique event will allow our students to interact informally with a variety of specialists and to brainstorm topics and ideas for their research with graduate students, professors and professionals who are also willing to mentor TVT students throughout the
research process.

                   graduation

We are looking for additional volunteers who are willing to share their knowledge and experience on the evening of October 1st (6:00 - 8:00): scientists, artists, singers, designers, doctors, engineers, writers, economists, computer programmers and so on! Mentor opportunities are also available (though not required).

Many TVT students already know the topic of this year's research, and some of them had even started to work on their research over the summer; while others are still deciding what to devote their research to - but all of them would greatly benefit from conversations with experts and all of them will be extremely grateful to you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Special guests will include Dr. Said Shokair, the director of UC Irvine UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) and Dr. Roxane Silver Cohen, professor of Psychology and Social Behavior at UCI, who is a great supporter of TVT's Academic Research Program.  Dr. Cohen and Dr. Shokair are joining us together with the graduate students from UCI, who will share their knowledge about the areas of their research and will help TVT students in selecting the topic of research for this year's Academic Research conference (April 20, 2010).  Dr. Shokair will also talk about visiting UCI labs, "Shadow a Scientist" and other UCI/TVT partnership programs.

Please, let us know, if you could help us with this important academic event.

Submit the questionnaire below to Ms. A. Korinevskaya, TVT Advanced Learners Program Coordinator and Conference Committee Chair at akor@tarbut.com.
