PARSHAT OF THE WEEK - NASO |
|
This week's parsha contains the Priestly blessing that we say in synagogue. It ends with a prayer that G-d should give us peace.
This blessing is worded in the singular, which would indicate that it is a blessing for each individual, not a national blessing. Wouldn't it make more sense to bless a nation with peace? There is probably nothing more fundamental for a nation. Furthermore, while peace is important on an interpersonal level, there are surely more, or at least equally, significant issues in the life of an individual - such as health, love, personal satisfaction... What exactly is this personal peace, and why is it singled out?
Every human being is made up of a body and a soul. The soul yearns to be G-dly, while the body wants to sleep. That's quite a dichotomy. You wake up in the morning in the midst of a raging battle. The soul wants to get up and do G-dly things; the body clings tightly onto the pillow. Assuming you do actually make it out of bed, the soul now wants to get on with meaningful accomplishment, while the body urgently wants to escape into the newspaper, the TV or anything it can find - the more mindless, the better.
On your way into work, the soul wants to smile at the other souls. The body wants you to look as miserable as you can for the other bodies - after all, you dragged it out of bed this morning. The soul wants you to be full of life and energy for your day. The body wants you to mope around depressed. The soul wants to have deep, meaningful relationships with other people; the body wants you to chew on them until you don't need them any more, and then spit out the bones. The soul wants to engage in reality; the body wants drugs and other stimuli to help it escape reality.
This battle between body and soul is constant. There is hardly a situation in life in which the two do not have diametrically different preferences. We are faced with constant turmoil. It is peace from this turmoil to which the Priestly blessing refers. The Sages say there is only one way to achieve this "personal peace." The soul will never make peace with the body. Its drive for G-d is too deep. But, given time, the body can learn to enjoy the pleasures of the soul.
If you succumb to the desires and passions of the body, say our Sages, you will be in turmoil forever. Struggle to live as a soul, however, and peace becomes a real possibility. This sense of inner harmony and completeness is that for which we humans ultimately search. As such, this is the most fitting theme for the priestly blessing.

TVT GRANDPARENTS UNITE |
|
| "Hello! Let me introduce myself. I'm Bobbie Wyman, grandmother of five TVT students and an enthusiastic fan of the school. I'd like to start an organization of TVT grandparents to give us an opportunity to meet each other, have fun and - most importantly - support the school.
Between all of us, we must represent a large number of skills, professional backgrounds, and sources of expertise. We could offer these to the school as well as volunteer for projects, fill in gaps, and raise funds.
Will you join me? I think we could have a good time while working together to become a great resource for the school!
All interested grandparents, please contact Linsey Savage at (949) 509-9500 ext. 3224 (lsavage@tarbut.com) for more information. |

|
| Your PTSO is very excited to invite you to the
2009 TVT Family Fun Day!
Save-the-Date! This year the theme of this VERY FUN and FREE event for the whole TVT community is "Splash City".
We know how much the kids love to get wet...so we have added some new entertainment that will hit the spot -
50' slip & slides and 2 story high water slides.
We've added these to the traditional slides and bungees and many other exciting activities where you don't get wet. So it's the best of both worlds and the kids will love it!
Also, this year we have moved the event to the later afternoon. There will be lots of yummy treats for everyone like snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn - but this year you can bring your own pareve/dairy picnic if you want!!!
There will be a family picnic area - so bring your blanket, umbrella and chairs and invite your family and friends over to enjoy the afternoon together as we close out another awesome school year.

TVT OFFERS SUMMER COLLEGE APPLICATION INSTITUTE FOR OUR SENIORS |
|
|
TVT's College Counselor, Mr. Clint Davis, introduces the TVT Summer College Application Institute: an intensive three-day program focused on developing powerful and persuasive college applications.
"Our senior students will leave this three-day experience feeling in control of their application process--our goal is for every student to complete the common application by the end of the three-day institute. As a component of the program, I invited a select group of college admission representatives from around the country to join us as we take our students through the college application process. The representatives lead small, specialized workshops on such topics as grabbing the reader in a college essay, how college admissions faculty evaluate the student's applications, finding the right college match for each student, how to get the most out of a campus visit, and how to recognize subtle differences between schools that appear similar."
Along with the application, essay writing, and financial aid workshops, each student will learn interviewing skills and participate in authentic evaluated interviews with alumni panelists from highly selective universities. As a component of the program, there will also be a "Parent Workshop on Financing College"
If your soon-to be Senior student hasn't sign up, don't miss this opportunity.

2ND GRADE MITZVAH PROJECT A HUGE SUCCESS |
|
|
Our Second grade students enthusiastically supported the Israel Guide Dog Center during the month of May. The children had the opportunity to view a very moving DVD that provided understanding of how the breeding and training program works. They learned that this is the only such program in Israel and that the dogs are taught to understand Hebrew.
Our collection grew rapidly as children brought in their own money and parents did the same. We have surpassed our goal of donating $500 to sponsor a puppy! A very special guest, Mrs. Linda Becker, came to TVT along with her assistance dog, Lyla. Mrs. Becker spoke with second grade students about her specially trained canine and answered a myriad of excellent questions.
Each child had the opportunity to practice asking if they could pet the dog prior to doing so. Students wrote heartfelt than-you notes to Mrs. Becker and Lyla for their wonderful visit. For more information, please visit Israel Guide Dog. |

KAHILLAH ("COMMUNITY") CONNECTION "KC" WELCOMES NEW FAMILIES TO TVT |
|
|
The mission of Kehillah ("Community") Connection (KC) is to help families that are new to TVT feel welcomed - by an "insider" like you!
We need you to let our new families know how happy we are that they decided to bring their children to TVT, that they, absolutely, made the right decision, and that they are not "outsiders", but rather part of our "TVT family".
This year our Kahillah Connection "KC" is expanding to include representatives of all grades - K through 12!
That's where you come in! As a volunteer for the KC, you will be assigned the names of 2-3 new TVT families (depending on the number of new families and the number of volunteers) to contact.
We will provide you with a script of the Top Ten FAQs to review that covers topics like school communication, parking, hot lunch, the school calendar, and more. Your new families may or may not have students the same age(s) as yours. To help the new students feel welcome, Admissions Director, Wendy Leberman will assign "buddies" in the classroom to the new students to help them get through those first days of being "the new kid".
Finally, we will conduct a:
New Parents Orientation and Campus Tour
Wednesday, September 2nd, beginning @ 8am
Please remember, you were the "new kid" once. Volunteer to be a member of Kehillah Connection and welcome our new parents and their families to our TVT Community!
Thank you for your support.
Please contact, Laura Dolan, Kehillah Connection Chair, lauradolan217@cox.net by June 18th, if you're interested in participating. |

TVT 5TH GRADER EARNS TOP SPOT IN NATIONAL COMPETITION |
|
Congratulations to Jacob Kupperman who earned a prefect score in the difficult Blue Division of this year's WordMasters Challenge! In the entire country, only 215 fifth graders earned perfect scores. Other TVT fifth graders who also achieved outstanding results included Seth Eaton and Robert Theisen. The students were coached in preparation for the Challenge by TVT's 5th Grade teacher, Mr. Grant Furry. Medals and certificates will be awarded soon.
WordMasters Challenge is a national language arts competition entered by approximately 230,000 students annually. It supports TVT's Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) for Critical Thinkers and Problem Solvers, by encouraging students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenging them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.
Working to solve the Challenge analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Though most vocabulary-boosting and analogy-solving activities have been created for high school students, the WordMasters materials have been specifically designed for younger students, grades three through eight and are a successful and fun supplement to TVT's core language arts curriculum. | |
