PARSHAT OF THE WEEK - BAMIDBAR

In the second year of travel in the desert, Moshe and Aharon were commanded by the Almighty to count all male Israelites between 20 and 60. There were 603,550 available for military service. The tribe of Levi was exempt because of their special duties as religious leaders. (It is probably from here that countries give divinity deferments to clergy and divinity students.)

The twelve tribes were directed regarding the formation (three tribes were on each side of the Portable Sanctuary) in which they were to camp and travel.

The 22,300 Levites were commanded in the Sanctuary service. The family of Gershon was to transport the coverings of the Sanctuary. The family of Kehos carried the Ark, Table, Menorah and Altars. The family of Merari transported the boards, pillars, bolts and sockets.

The Torah states:
"And with you shall be one man from each tribe, each man

should be the head of his family." (Numbers 1:4).

What lesson about life is the Torah conveying with this verse?
A simple and boorish person who came from a distinguished lineage was arguing with a wise scholar who came from a non-distinguished family. The coarse ignoramus boasted about his illustrious ancestors. "I am a scion of a great people. Your ancestors are nothing compared to mine," he arrogantly boasted. The scholar retorted, "True, you come from a long line of great people. Unfortunately, the line ends with you. My family tree begins with me."

Lineage has been compared to a carrot - often times the best part is in the ground. In truth, lineage is like the number "zero." If you make something of yourself, you place a "one" before the zero. If you are a "zero" then all you have are two zeroes.

Our lesson: You should live your life so that your descendants will be proud to consider you their ancestor!

REMINDER! LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we would like to remind you that all library and textbooks must be returned by the last day school.
- 12th grade students must return all books before their May
  27th graduation.
- Students going on the O Ambassador Africa trip or the
Poland & Israel trip must return all books before their
  departures.
In accordance with the school policy, the school may charge each family for any book not returned by these due dates, using the credit card number on file.

As in the past, all books that are returned during the summer will be considered a donation to the school. No refunds will be made.

Please keep this in mind as you begin preparing for summer. We suggest checking with the librarian if you have any concerns, as she will be more than happy to print a list of all outstanding books registered to your student.

Thank you for your cooperation with helping to maintain TVT's well stocked libraries.

JUNIORS HARD AT WORK FOR FAMILIES FORWARD

The class of 2010 spent Thursday morning volunteering with Families Forward.  Thirty one of our students worked in a warehouse to organize donations that will furnish transitional living homes.  These homes will help four Orange County families get the support they need to overcome homelessness.

The students moved and organized furniture, boxed linens, setup kitchen wares, and cleaned donations.  It was a morning of hard work that will really make a difference for people in need.

Great job, Juniors!

MEMORIAL DAY

This Memorial Day, while we celebrate our safety with our family and friends, let us not forget those that made this day possible for us.

"The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.  ~Benjamin Disraeli"

Tarbut V'Torah will be closed on Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day.

Shabbat Shalom!
