PARSHAT OF THE WEEK - KEDOSHIM

The Torah states, "Love your fellow man as yourself, I am the Almighty" (Leviticus 19:18). The Talmud (Shabbat 31a) relates that a non-Jew came to Hillel and said to him, "Convert me on the condition that you will teach me the entire Torah while I stand on one foot.

" Hillel accepted his condition and told him, "What you dislike, do not do to your friend. This is the entire Torah. The rest is commentary. Go and learn." Since Hillel was referring to the commandment of Love Your Neighbor, why didn't he just mention the words of this verse?

Rabbi Yeruchem Levovitz of the Mir Yeshiva explained that this is to teach us an important principle. From the words "love your fellow man" one might think that as long as one feels the emotion of love towards others, one fulfills this commandment.

The truth is that just feeling love alone is not sufficient. Rather, love must motivate us to do positive things for others and to refrain from any actions or words that could cause someone pain or suffering.

HaKsav V'HaKabballah, an encyclopedic Torah work, gives the following practical advice on fulfilling this mitzvah:
Treat others with respect
Seek the best for others
Feel the pain of others
Greet others with warmth
Give the benefit of the doubt
Help others
Be willing to make moderate loans or gifts
Do not consider yourself better than others.

The 7th Annual Research Conference was a huge success! Audiences were wowed as students presented high-level research on a number of interesting topics. One judge commented, "rarely have I seen so many smart kids produce such deep insights into problems of physics and mathematics with such confidence, eloquence and power of presentation, even novelty of approach."

Kol HaKavod to Ms. Alla Korinevskaya for her vision and commitment to the project, to all the students and research advisors who produced such phenomenal work, and to the three finalists: Aaron Berdy ("Introduction to Game Theory"), Jonathan Zalomek ("Using Genetics to Cure Diseases") and Justin Sass ("Revitalization of Hebrew Language").

MOOT BEIT DIN

A team of students, under the supervision of Mr. Lee Weissman, just returned from Denver, where RAVSAK (The Jewish Community Day School Network) held the biggest and best Moot Beit Din (rabbinical court based on Torah) ever. Sixteen teams from schools throughout North America  participated in the Shabbaton, lasting from Thursday evening through the competition on Sunday morning.

Moot Beit Din is a unique program that enables students from Jewish high schools to delve into issues of Jewish law through creative engagement with contemporary situations. It provides students with an opportunity to explore the relevance of Halakhah (torah law) and to stretch their imagination in applying Jewish traditional resources to their lives and to the modern world. After intensive study of halakhic sources, students prepare written decisions to a case given to them. They then present and defend their decisions before judges during oral argument at the competition.

Moot Bet Din
Our community representatives Einav Silverstein, Jonathan Zalomek, Justin Sass and Sara Weissman came together with other students and teachers through their common passion for Talmud Torah. They conducted Chesed projects for hospitalized children, at a thrift shop for women and children in need and women in a shelter. In their free time they had the opportunity to stroll around Red Rocks Park and viewed Iguanosaurus tracks at Dinosaur Ridge.  At the competition, they applauded the presentations of the fruits of their erudition and creativity before a panel of rabbis and lawyers and an audience of peers and local supporters. Friendships were formed, memories were made, and characters were molded at this year's Moot Beit Din. Our students came back inspired and motivated.

"O AMBASSADOR" UPDATE

TVT's O Ambassadors are 5 weeks away from boarding a plane to Africa!  How exciting is this? Congratulations to everyone.  Many people did not think they could do it, but they did.  A special thanks to all the Walk-and-Learn participants who came out to support the club, and especially to our wonderful volunteers, who have been tirelessly assisting the O Ambassador Club as they prepare for this momentous event.
JUNIOR STATE OF AMERICA
Twenty-four TVT high school students attended the Junior State of America (JSA) Spring State convention in Los Angeles on April 24-26th.  Our students joined over 1800 students from around the state to take part in debates, discussion, thought talks, and presentations on current issues and political philosophy.
