From PBS's acclaimed history series, American
Experience, We Shall Remain establishes Native history as an essential part of American history.

These five documentaries spanning three hundred years tell the story of pivotal moments in U.S. history from the Native American perspective, upending two-dimensional stereotypes of American Indians as simply ferocious warriors or peaceable lovers of the land.

Greetings!

In this edition of WNAM e-News, I'm excited to tell you about two churches
that are taking steps toward greater min-
istry to Native people in their commun-
ities:  Waite Park Wesleyan Church in Minneapolis, MN, and Hayward Wesleyan Church in Hayward, WI.

On April 26, I had the privilege of preach-
ing at Waite Park for their missions emphasis weekend.  It was great to be with Rev. Duane Fisher and the people of Waite Park, and hear of their commitment to reaching their community and world for Christ!

At the luncheon following the morning worship service, I met many people who have faithfully supported WNAM's ministry over the years.  It was a blessing to hear of their excitement as they now considered ways they could engage the thousands of Natives who live in the Twin Cities.

Please pray for Waite Park as they seek God's direction.  As I shared with them, God may lead them to new ministry opportunities, or He may want them to keep doing what they're already doing to be a light in the community...but do it now with a greater sense of awareness for reaching Natives for Him.

In Christ,

Hayward Wesleyan - Impacting Lac Courte Oreilles Rez
by Rich Avery

After speaking at Waite Park Wesleyan Church in Minneapolis, I traveled to the northwoods of Wisconsin to meet with Rev. Mark O. Wilson and Native ministry leaders from Hayward Wesleyan Church.

I was blessed to hear the many ways this congregation is impacting the 4,000 members of the nearby Lac Courte Oreilles (Ojibwe) Reservation

The Lord has strategically placed over 20 people from the church into positions of influence on the rez: in the health department, pharmacy, funeral home, schools, after-school recreation centers, and more.

In addition, the church runs a van ministry which brings people from the rez to church on Sundays (they're praying for funds so they can add a bus) and a teen mothers program on Tuesday nights.

Please join Hayward Wesleyan in prayer as they consider additional youth and family outreaches, and maybe even a church service, on the rez.

They're also praying about the possibility of buying a 168-acre farm adjacent to the rez, which would be called Hope Haven.  Pictured below are Hope Haven visionaries Jathan and Becky Brubaker (center), along with Pastor Mark Wilson (far right) and other church leaders.

Hope Haven Farm - Hayward, WI

This working farm would offer transitional housing, life skills classes, Bible studies, family reconciliation programs, and work opportunities for those who have recently come out of jail/prison or drug/alcohol treatment programs.

Hope Haven would also provide a safe coffee-house type of community center where people of all ages could come to connect with people who care, play games, study the Bible, and more.

Community leaders tell Becky and Jathan there is a growing need for these types of programs on the rez.  Please pray for wisdom as these plans develop, and funding in order to purchase the property.

While in Hayward, I was privileged to meet one of the church's first Native converts, Tiffany Leach, who is now a leader in the church and on the rez.  Earlier this week, she gave birth to Hayward's newest member, Ode'iminikwe Charlotte Leach.  Pastor Mark explains the beautiful meaning of her Ojibwe name at his Revitalize Your Church blog for small town/rural pastors.
