Airway World News and Events

A Message from the Founders of

Airway World

Dear Friends of Airway World,

With new exhibitors, a new hall under construction, new content and interactive events, and new members joining every day, Airway World is rapidly becoming the dynamic on-line airway community we envisioned it to be.  As we close out 2011, we want to take this opportunity to thank the Airway World Partners who have helped to make all of this possible.

Our corporate partners are critical to the success of this endeavor.   Without Clarus Medical, Verathon Medical, King Systems, KARL STORZ, Journal Watch, ROTIGS, BOMImed and Seitz Technical Products, we would not be able to offer Airway World events and content for free.  Each of these companies shares our mission of improving the practice of airway management and the experience of the airway practitioner.  Their support of Airway World is a clear demonstration of their commitment to this worthy mission.

You can find information about each of our Partners and their airway products in the Airway World Exhibit Hall.

We wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday season and look forward to seeing you in Airway World soon!

Sincerely,

Ron M. Walls, MD
Michael F. Murphy, MD

Airway Challenge #4:  Bronchitis? Not So Sure

A pediatric airway case with three questions

A 9-year-old boy presents with severe respiratory distress. The parents report that he had been ill for 1-1 ½ weeks with URI symptoms of cough, congestion, intermittent wheezing. Approximately two days prior, he had seen his primary care provider and been diagnosed with "bronchitis" and was started on azithromycin orally. On day of admission, his respiratory distress worsened and his lips turned blue. The parents also note that his face "seems swollen." His review of systems was negative for fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, urinary changes, weight loss, headache or sore throat.

Past Medical History: Healthy

Medications: None except day 3 of azithromycin

Allergies: None

In the ED:

Vitals: P 134, BP 121/66, Sat 100% on NRB

General: Scared, ill-appearing boy, tripoding

Face: Swollen from nipples up, marked proptosis of eyes

Neck: Swollen lymph nodes in anterior or posterior chain

Lungs: End-expiratory wheezing

Extremities: No edema

A portable chest radiograph was obtained and IV access was secured. You prepare to intubate for presumed impending respiratory failure. And then the x-ray results return.....

View the chest x-ray here.

Question 1:  What do the results of the chest x-ray demonstrate?

A.  Normal for age thymic silhouette

B.  A large mediastinal mass

C.  Upper lobe collapse

Enter your response and learn the answer here.

Question 2:  What is the best strategy for managing this child's airway?

A.  Rapid sequence intubation with an induction agent and paralytic

B.  Sedated intubation with ketamine

C.  Awake intubation fiberoptically

D.  Nasotracheal intubation

Question 3:  A cuffed endotracheal tube should be strongly considered in this case.  True or False?

New Custom Training Hall Under Construction
Airway World Invites Educators Into New Training Hall
Airway World invites educators to build and manage their own training booths in Airway World.  These customized booths will allow educators to assemble airway resources in one place for the benefit of their residents, students or colleagues.  The educational materials (videos, links, webinars, quizzes, articles, research summaries, etc.) selected for a customized booth can come from the vast Airway World library or from the booth manager's own sources.  We will select 10 organizations to participate in this free program at the start and will make additional opportunities available over time.  If your organization is interested in participating, please email Terry T. Steele at tsteele@theairwaysite.com
