Quarterly Research Review with Ron M. Walls, MD (webinar)
It's easy to stay current in the field of airway management with these quarterly research reviews! Airway Management of the Patient in Shock wth Alan C. Heffner, MD (webinar)
Airway management of the hemodynamically unstable patient is challenging. Drug selection, monitoring, and technical aspects of intubation can be more difficult in shock states. What is the best induction agent and at what dose? How does one best assess oxygenation? These questions and more will be addressed by Dr. Alan C. Heffner, Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Carolinas Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Participants may submit questions and comments to Dr. Heffner during and after the presentation. Limit 100 participants.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE: A link to each webinar is listed in the Airway World Auditorium. Click on the link when it becomes live 30 minutes before the start of the program. You will be taken to the webinar where you will enter your name and email address to join the session.

Airway Challenge #1: Burrito Cafe |
| |
What would you do if...
You are working as a paramedic and stop for lunch at a burrito café. As you step out of your truck, a patron at an outside table suddenly stands up forcefully, tipping over the table and scattering plates and utensils. His face is plethoric and he looks panicked, but is not making a sound. He is grasping his throat with both hands. As you grab your carry out bag and run toward him, a burly diner jumps up, announces "I know Industrial First Aid" and immediately performs the Heimlich maneuver three times without success. As you reach his side, the patron lapses into unconscious, and is limp in the burly rescuer's arms. The rescuer lowers the apneic, unconscious, cyanotic patron to the ground. You quickly realize that your best first maneuver is:
1. Direct laryngoscopy
2. Bag mask ventilation
3. Abdominal thrust
4. Open mouth, perform finger sweep
5. Needle cricothyrotomy

An Invitation from the Society for Airway Management |
|
Dear Friends of Airway World,
I would like to cordially invite you to attend the Society for Airway Management's 15th Annual Scientific Meeting to be held September 16-18, 2011 at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The goal of the 15th Annual Society for Airway Management Scientific Meeting is to deliver current practical education in Difficult Airway management to all anesthesiologists, critical care physicians, emergency medicine physicians, otolaryngologists, trauma surgeons, certified nurse anesthetists, flight nurses, paramedics, trainees, and all other interested healthcare professionals. This course has been developed to feature international experts in the various fields of medicine dealing with airway management. Many aspects of difficult airway management, lectures, and small group round table discussion sessions will be presented, as well as an afternoon devoted to Hands-On Workshops and Patient Simulator sessions. There is also an Abstract and Scientific Exhibit Session with oral presentations of the most recent research in airway management.
We have an exciting program planned this year! Topics include: Innovations in Education and Information Dissemination, Can We Accurately Predict the Difficult Airway?, Expecting the Unexpected, Current Controversies in Airway Management, Innovations outside the Operating Room, and Dare to Share: Scary Cases in the Real World. We have many talented international speakers from France, the United Kingdom, Canada, The Netherlands, India, Italy, Germany, Denmark and New Zealand.
We encourage residents to attend the meeting and to submit abstracts. We award several trainee travel awards to outstanding abstract submissions, but please note, the deadline for the 250-word abstract submissions is July 15, 2011. There will be a resident's round table on Saturday September 17, 2011 entitled "Fiberoptic Tips and Tricks" presented by Dr. Carin Hagberg and Dr. Marshal Kaplan.
This year's Ovassapian Lecture will be given by Dr. Timothy Cook, who will present the results of his recently published (UK) 4th National Audit Project (NAP4). Dr. Cook and Dr. Arnd Timmerman will also host an expert round table session on how to get started with research in airway management.
The JW Marriott Camelback Inn is a beautiful place, and we have planned several outdoor social activities during the meeting to take advantage of the luscious landscape. When you are not attending the meeting, check out the spa, pools, hiking trails and golf courses on the property! We have also arranged for kid's activities at the resort so feel free to bring the whole family.
More information as well as the complete meeting brochure and registration form can be found at www.samhq.com/annual-meeting or http://www.umassmed.edu/cme/events
We look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale in September!
