A Message from the Founders of

Airway World

Dear Friends of Airway World,

Happy New Year!  We are looking forward to bringing you more live events and educational resources in Airway World in 2011.  Watch for invitations to webinars and other interactive events featuring members of our National Airway Faculty and invited guest speakers.

In 2011, our focus will be on building Airway World into a vibrant community - a lively, interactive environment where exchanges of ideas and knowledge take place daily.  We have so much to learn from each other and now with Airway World, a great tool to share information and interact.  We will start with the Public Chat function to create message boards for you to post your ideas, comments and responses to questions.  Check out two message boards that are live right now:

1. The "Airwaves" Message Board - where you can comment on the blog postings of Ron Walls, MD

2. The Airway World Message Board - where you can tell us what you think of Airway World and what programs you would like us to offer.

To post on these message boards, click on the Public Chat icon on the Airway World toolbar.  Follow the green arrow to "join" the message board you want.  Type in your comment and ignite the conversation!

We look forward to hearing from you in 2011!

Trauma Airway Review with Michael A. Gibbs, MD (webinar)

potential pitfalls.  In this case-based session, Dr. Gibbs will review the fundamentals of trauma RSI, difficult airway assessment in the traumatized airway, and trauma physiology as it relates to overall airway management.  Don't be nervous about your next trauma airway; be ready!  Participants may submit questions to Dr. Gibbs during and after the webinar (via an accompanying chat box).  Limit 100 participants.

Quarterly Research Review with Ron M. Walls, MD (webinar)

It's easy to stay current in the field of airway management with these quarterly research reviews!  Dr. Walls selects the most relevant research from the most recently published, shares the results and discusses their impact on the practice of airway management.  Participants may submit questions and comments to Dr. Walls during and after the presentation.  Limit 100 participants.

Join Ali S. Raja, MD, Associate Director for Trauma and attending physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, as he takes a bold look at the controversies surrounding the management of the trauma airway.  Have you ever been told that laryngoscopy is unsafe for trauma patients because of cervical spine motion?  What is the supporting evidence for pretreatment agents in patients with suspected brain injury?  Is Etomidate safe in polytrauma?  Be prepared to support your trauma airway management decisions!  Dr. Raja lays out what we know and don't know about airway care of the  trauma patient.  Participants may submit questions and comments to Dr. Raja during and after the presentation.  Limit 100 participants.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:  A link to each webinar will be listed in the Airway World Auditorium.  Click on the link when it becomes "live" shortly before the start of the program.  You will be taken to the webinar where you will enter your name and email address to join the session.

Airway World Spotlight:  "Airwaves" - a blog by Ron M. Walls

Visit The Collection for the new booth called "Airwaves."  In this booth, you will find blogs by Ron M. Walls, MD.  Dr. Walls writes about current and controversial airway topics.  Here are a few quotes from Dr. Walls' recent blog postings:

On delayed sequence intubation...

"The practice of giving an induction agent alone and then delaying administration of the paralytic agent during an oxygenation phase is potentially hazardous, relatively untested, and should be reserved for very specific clinical circumstances and very experienced providers."

On the RSI dose of Succinycholine...

"In any case, when performing emergency intubation using an RSI technique there is no downside to using a larger dose of succinylcholine and significant potential upside.  The take-home message: The dose of succinylcholine for rapid sequence intubation is 1.5 mg/kg."

 On expensive "toys"...

"Video laryngoscopes clearly are superior to their primitive conventional direct laryngoscope cousins.  So, why are they not yet in most, or all, community hospitals?  The answer is a complex blend of technophobia, misdirected fiscal consideration, and lack of knowledge/exposure."
