Paradox...

My understanding of Christmas has evolved over the years.  I now come to the manger with eyes that have been shaped by both birth and death.  I come knowing that his birth leads to crucifixion without which there can be no resurrection.  And, like Mary, I find myself pondering many things in my heart.

While just a girl, Mary somehow knew that the advent of God into our lives came with a price... the price of a love that would test and try us that we might be molded in the image of incarnate love. The price of such love is sacrifice.

The wisdom of the desert abbas and amas reminds us: Through the sorrow God carves in our souls channels that may flow rivers of joy.  We cannot encounter the true joy of Christmas without also facing the sorrows born of injustice, suffering and loss.  While Madison Avenue would have us focus on tinsel and bright lights, Love calls us to receive and bear the one gift that cannot be bought... a Savior's love that paid the price of loss and pain and sacrifice.  A Savior's love that invites us to embrace suffering that through our souls may flow rivers of joy.

May we dare to continue the journey begun in Bethlehem as it takes us to our Jerusalem.

Christmas blessings,

 Debbie Rundlett, general presbyter

Holy Habit: Celebrate St. Stephen's Day

The traditional Christmas carol Good King Wenceslaus tells the legend of a Christian ruler who sees a poor man gathering fuel on the Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr. King Wenceslaus, upon learning from his page where the man lived, decided to bring him some Christmas cheer. On the second day of Christmas, which falls on the Feast of St. Stephen, it is traditional to provide food or clothing to those in need. During this Christmas season, celebrate the Feast of St. Stephen by providing warm clothing and food for a person in need.

Walgreens Plans To Exit Express Scripts Network on January 1

Beginning January 1, 2012, Walgreens will no longer participate in the Express Scripts network. As a result, all Medical Plan members, whether active or retired, who fill prescriptions at a Walgreens-owned pharmacy will have to pay full price up front.

This announcement affects all Walgreens-owned pharmacies, including Duane Reade, Happy Harry's, and Option Care - all of which will be nonparticipating as of January 1, 2012.

If you have questions regarding the Walgreens matter, please visit Express-Scripts.com or call Express Scripts at 877-508-1379. For further information, please read the recent Pensions.org article.

Learn about Healthcare Reform at Pensions.org

The Board of Pensions has launched a new Web page about healthcare reform for plan members and church treasurers and business administrators. The page, Pensions.org/healthcarereform, summarizes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), or federal healthcare reform, and explains its impact on the Medical Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and, in turn, on plan members and PC(USA) churches and employing organizations.

The new page helps members and church treasurers and business administrators understand:

  • the major provisions of the PPACA, by year of implementation
  • what the PPACA requires of consumers and employers, and how the law affects coverage under the Medical Plan (Those provisions requiring employing organizations to take action are highlighted.)

The Board will update the Healthcare Reform page as the law and its implications unfold. Please bookmark the page, Pensions.org/healthcarereform, in your Web browser so you can refer to it quickly.

If you have any questions, please call Member Services at 800-773-7752 (800-PRESPLAN).
