Bariloche in Patagonia? Well, OK, you can say Bariloche is at the VERY VERY northern edge of Patagonia, as it swings on the coattails of this travel buzzword. But it is really in the Lake District. Specifically in Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, the first and largest of Argentina's parks, spanning some 750,000 hectares, a little over half way down the country and nestled up against the Andes. Bariloche sits on the shores of the Lake Nahuel Huapi, surrounded by forests, sparkling glacial lakes and year around snow capped mountains. It spreads out along the shores of the lake and up the hills of Cerro Otto and is filled with chocolate shops, tea houses, boutiques and shops. Both a summer and a winter resort, along with spectacular scenery, Bariloche has activities galore: fly fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, sailing, river rafting, hiking, trekking, climbing, bird watching and, in the winter, snow skiing and all the associated winter sports. And so you ask, in a national park on the edge of Patagonia with activities galore, where's the Art? The answer: The El Casco Art Hotel, located just 15 minutes from town and directly on the shores of the lake. Throughout its suites, restaurant, wine-bar and common areas are 300 works of art by prestigious Argentine artists. The gardens have 40 sculptures and the cocktail menu has speciality drinks inspired by the artists. Each of the 33 suites has original works of art, air-conditioning (believe it or not, an oddity in Bariloche), well appointed amenities, state-of-the-art plasma TVs, DVD and music equipment, WiFi, and best of all, direct vistas of the lake.
The restaurant offers great lake views and the wine cellar over 600 bottles from Argentina's best national wineries. There is an outdoor deck and BBQ area, a fitness studio and health club with massage and sauna, an indoor-outdoor heated pool, and a Jacuzzi.
Just 15 minutes away is Cerro Catedral, the main ski resort, and almost as close are two golf courses and a polo club.
So after a full exhilirating day of the activity of your choice, enjoy the refined tranquility of El Casco Art Hotel.
