Stonewall Heritage

Over the years, Stonewall Community Foundation has benefited greatly from generous New Yorkers who included the foundation in their estate planning.  To recognize these committed individuals, the foundation has formalized a planned giving society named Stonewall Heritage.

Stonewall Heritage members have willed part of their estate (whether that be cash, stocks, a 401(K), a life insurance policy or otherwise) to the foundation when they pass away.  They are recognized throughout the year and honored with an annual reception in the fall.

In our lifetimes many LGBTQ causes will require support.  From marriage equality to HIV/AIDS research , there are many issues in our community that we all care about.  But when selecting a beneficiary for a will, IRA, 401(K) or life insurance policy, please consider naming the Stonewall Community Foundation to establish a charitable legacy that will continue to invest in LGBTQ New York long after you're gone.  Over time, our issues will evolve and the world will change, but Stonewall will remain dedicated to strengthening New York City's LGBTQ community and to providing for future needs as they manifest.

We're extremely grateful that in 2011 Stonewall was the beneficiary of a portion of Paula Ettelbrick's 401(K) and a portion of Robert Simonetti's estate.  In the years to come, we look forward to being the trusted stewards of other estates as we build our endowment to serve and enrich New York City's LGBTQ community.

If you have already made Stonewall Community Foundation a part of your planned giving or if you want to learn more about Stonewall Heritage, please click here and fill out the following form.  Alternatively, you can contact our Interim Executive Director, Richard Burns, at 212.367.1266 or richard.burns@stonewallfoundation.org.

He'bro benefits Stonewall Quarter Share

He'bro, a group for gay Jews that organizes and advertises gay Jewish related events in New York City, made Stonewall Quarter Share the beneficiary of proceeds raised through their Christmas Eve Jewbilee.  He'bro founder Jayson Littman explained, "For each He'bro party, we select an LGBT charity to partner with that shares our value of giving back to the community, and SQS is a perfect partner in its mission of creating a community of giving.  Additionally, with many members of SQS attending our He'bro events, we felt it was a nice opportunity for partnership."

Stonewall wants to extend a special thanks to Jayson Littman for making this possible.

Stonewall Quarter Share Releases its 2012 RFP

Stonewall Quarter Share (SQS) is seeking proposals for two $7,500 grants.  SQS plans to award this year's grants to New York City-based non-profits whose work is focused on economic empowerment, positively impacting the economic standing of New York City's LGBTQ community.

The grants will be awarded at Stonewall Quarter Share's IMPACT.  IMPACT, formerly known as Pointe 25, is the culminating celebration for SQS.  More than just a sexy and fun cocktail party, IMPACT is SQS's annual grants reception that brings together 250 young LGBTQ professionals for an unforgettable evening.  This year, Stonewall IMPACT is being held on Thursday, April 26th, at Santos Party House from 7pm-11pm.  (Sponsorships and tickets can be purchased here)

Below are links to the SQS 2012 RFP and title page.  Questions should be directed to Lyle Matthew Kan at lyle.matthew.kan@stonewallfoundation.org.

Meet the Ettelbrick Project for LGBTQ Family Recognition Advisory Committee

The Ettelbrick Project for LGBTQ Family Recognition has convened an Advisory Committee to offer insight, suggestions, assistance and support to the project's Director Terry Boggis.  Advisory Committee members will provide relevant historical information, technical assistance, introductions and access, expertise, ideas and thoughtful perspective, and draw on the tools of their trades and work places to augment the resources of Stonewall and the Director.  The Advisory Committee includes (as of printing):

  • John D'Emilio - Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies at University of Illinois, Chicago
  • Jill Dolan - Annan Professor in English; Professor of English and Theater, Lewis Center for the Arts; Director, Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies at Princeton University
  • Nan Hunter - Professor of Law and Associate Dean of Graduate Programs at Georgetown University
  • Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins - Assistant Professor, Adolescent Medicine & OB/GYN and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai Hospital
  • Tey Meadow - Sociologist and Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University
  • Nancy Polikoff - Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law
  • Doug Robinson - VP, Citigroup and former co-chair of Center Kids, the family program of the LGBT Community Center

The Ettelbrick Project for LGBTQ Family Recognition advances a vision for broad family recognition, informed by a feminist perspective, grounded in the lived experience of real LGBTQ families, and illuminated by LGBTQ activist history. It encourages LGBTQ community members and allies to engage in dialog and action on behalf of diverse families beyond those benefits provided through marriage.

Former Stonewall Executive Director, the late Paula Ettelbrick, secured support from the Ford Foundation in August 2011 to undertake this project.

Terry Boggis joined the staff of Stonewall in February 2012 to lead the work moving forward.

Scholarships Available for Lesbian Students

Scholarship founders Peggy Traub and Phyllis Dicker flank former Executive Director, the late Paula Ettelbrick

As tuition and other college-related costs continue to skyrocket, getting an education has become a daunting challenge, particularly for many LGBTQ students.  Stonewall, with the help of generous donors, has been providing crucial financial assistance to LGBTQ students for nearly a decade.

Last year, through its six scholarship programs, Stonewall directed over $30,000 to LGBTQ students in New York and beyond.  Of these, nine awards totaling $18,000 were made by the Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship Fund, which was started by Stonewall donor advised fund partners, Peggy Traub and Phyllis Dicker.  The program celebrates the achievements and contributions of lesbian activists while helping them further their academic careers.

This June three Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarships will be awarded, each in the amount of $3,000.  Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, be leaders in the community, and have a proven commitment to positively impacting LGBTQ lives.

Applications are due April 15th and can be downloaded here.
