Fall Grants Announced

In October 2011, Stonewall Community Foundation issued a Request for Proposals to over 240 community leaders representing a host of LGBTQ organizations and programs throughout New York City. The RFP was an invitation to apply for one-year, project-specific grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.
Our focus this year was on strategic partnerships, organizations coming together to protect, improve, and enrich the lives of LGBTQ people in New York City. Given our current economic and political climate, solidarity and resource sharing are invaluable if not essential to our success.
It was evident from the response, that this theme resonated within our community. We received a total of 19 proposals from 57 groups who have found innovative ways to integrate their work and maximize their impact. Our fall grantees are:
Streetwise and Safe | Audre Lorde Project - $13,000
These two organizations will partner to challenge the discriminatory and often abusive policing practices the NYPD employs against lesbian, gay, bisexual, two-spirit, trangender and gender non-conforming people of color.
Northeast Two-Spirit Society | Asian and Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS - $13,000
Spanning no less than six cities, this partnership will train those that work with the Native American two-spirit community on cultural sensitivity issues. The two groups both hope to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS within their community and make the current services more sensitive to the needs of two-spirit people.
Gay Asian and Pacific Islander Men of New York | Q-Wave | South Asian LGBT Association - $5,000
This grant will greatly improve the ability of these three organizations to work together and find cost efficiencies as they continue to improve the lives of LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander New Yorkers.
Supportive Children's Advocacy Network | Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center - $11,000
This partnership will offer LGBTQ youth in East Harlem a range of critical health and mental health services.
We hope that with our investment in these grantees we are able to strengthen New York City's LGBTQ community.

The William Fund becomes the newest Donor Advised Fund at Stonewall
 | |
William Malloy, Namesake of the William Fund
|
Donor Advised Funds at Stonewall Community Foundation contribute greatly to strengthening New York City's LGBTQ community. In 2011, Stonewall DAFs invested over a half a million dollars in various organizations benefiting New York City's LGBTQ community. The top five non-profits to receive DAF support in 2011 included:
- The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
- The ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & AIDS Project
- Center for Anti-Violence Education
- Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund
- In the Life Media
One of our newest DAFs is the William Fund, established by Joel Readence in honor of his late best friend, William Malloy. Why did Joel start the William Fund? Joel says, "When my best friend took his life six years ago, I knew I wanted to do something in his name. I wanted to add some validity to his death."
After witnessing a vigil in Washington Square Park for Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after being bullied at Rutgers University, Joel decided now was the time to act. He shopped around for various tools through which to create a legacy for William and settled on a Donor Advised Fund. With a DAF at Stonewall, Joel is able to have multiple friends donate to his fund and then they can select which non-profits will receive support from The William Fund. While the William Fund can act like a mini-foundation, supporting the causes it chooses, Stonewall Community Foundation handles all administrative tasks.
As Joel notes, "Once I figured out I wanted a Donor Advised Fund I looked to big companies like Charles Schwab. But I knew what Stonewall Community Foundation was and what they stood for. I knew that Stonewall was plugged into the LGBT community in New York and could provide proper support. It was a no brainer."
Are you interested in setting up your fund at Stonewall so you can more effectively direct your philanthropic activities? If you are, contact Richard Burns, Interim Executive Director, at 212.367.1266 or richard.burns@stonewallfoundation.org.

Stonewall Honors 2011:
A Friendly Night for all Families

Coinciding with World AIDS Day, Stonewall Community Foundation hosted the 8th Annual Stonewall Honors on December 1, 2011. This years theme was "family," and the honorees consisted:
- Paula Ettelbrick and Family (Paula, Adam & Julia Ettelbrick, Marianne Haggerty, Suzanne Goldberg & Mary Lou Kelley)
- The Alotta-Reagon Family (J. Bob Alotta & Toshi Reagon)
- The Marino-Thomas Family (Cathy, Shelia and Jacqueline)
- The Grover-Watson Family (Olive, Joanna, Wiley and Flynn).
After a beautiful program honoring each family for helping promote the recognition of all families, in all our diversity, the group of more than 200 women danced away the cold December evening.
It was truly a special night and for that we are extremely grateful for the generous support we received from our corporate sponsors: BV Coastal Estates, Coors Light, Morgan Stanley and Smirnoff. The event would not have been possible without the hard work of everyone on the steering committee: Amanda Brown, Jasmine Burnett, Dana deVille, Jo-Ann Disantis, Julie Goldscheid, Maria-Elena Grant, JoAnne Jimenez, Ileana Jimenez, Carri Lyon, Kristina Semos, Samantha Taylor, Kimberly Turner and Janet Wigfield. A special thanks also goes out to our Silver Sponsors: Dana deVille and Ann Northrop, the Grover-Watson Family (Olive, Joanna, Wiley and Flynn), and Carri Lyon.

Stonewall Says Goodbye to 3 Longtime Board Members
The December 2011 Board Meeting saw the graduation of Dana deVille, Ken Goody and Todd Montgomery from the Board of Directors. Over the years each of them notably served the foundation and helped New York City's LGBTQ community be a little stronger.
Dana deVille, Director of Real Estate at Tiffany & Co., was deeply involved in Stonewall Honors and kayaked in the Stonewall Swim during her time on the board. She also served as Secretary of the Board and as a member of the Executive Committee.
Ken Goody, Senior Vice President of Philanthropic Management at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, also served on the Executive Committee and found himself deeply involved in each grants cycle every year he served on the Board of Directors. Although he has finished serving his term on the Board, he will continue to be deeply involved with the foundation as we plan a donor development day for the spring.
Todd Montgomery, Vice President of the Global Partner Network at American Express, served as the Treasurer for the Board of Directors. Todd also chaired the Finance Committee and oversaw the annual audit.
We thank them for all the time and energy each of them put into Stonewall and into strengthening New York City's LGBTQ community.
