Jim Kelliher loves his Donor Advised Fund because it's "Easy"
If you ask Jim Kelliher why he started a Stonewall Community Foundation Donor Advised Fund, he'll jokingly say "Stonewall staff made me do it." But when it comes down to it, Jim opened his DAF because, in his own words, "I wanted to support Stonewall and I liked the idea that when a donation goes out from my DAF it has the stamp of Stonewall Community Foundation on it, so people know it comes from a gay organization." In that way, Jim helps promote and highlight the role of LGBTQ philanthropy in New York City whether or not that particular donation is going to an LGBTQ organization.
Jim loves how easy his DAF makes his annual giving. While Jim initially thought having a DAF might be hassle, he admits, "the system is very easy. The ease of use allows me to effortlessly fund all of my donations throughout the year."
With his DAF, Jim is able to donate a given amount in one calendar year and receive all the reciprocal tax benefits even if he doesn't award out the entire sum in that same calendar year. Jim gets one tax letter from Stonewall, but is able to redirect his donation to other organizations at his leisure. Moreover, Jim is able to utilize the expert knowledge of the staff at the Stonewall Community Foundation to learn about what new and emerging LGBTQ organizations across the five boroughs could really benefit from his support.
According to Jim, a DAF is a great tool for "anyone who gives away money on an annual basis, either throughout the year or at the end of the year, no matter how large or how small that sum is. Once you get it and once you do it, it's so easy."
Do you give annually? Are you interested in starting a Donor Advised Fund and helping to strengthen New York City's LGBTQ community from within? If so, for more information please contact Richard Burns, Interim Executive Director, at richard.burns@stonewallfoundation.org or at 212.367.1266. |

On Monday, October 3, Stonewall issued a Request for Proposals, inviting New York City LGBTQ organizations to apply for grant funding. This cycle the focus is on strategic partnerships: groups working together to achieve a common vision and make a greater impact. Depending on scope and cost, we will be awarding one-year, project-specific grants to a variety of collaborative, cooperative, and coalition efforts. Grants will range from $5,000 to $15,000.
Completed proposals must be received by noon on Monday, November 14, 2011. They will be reviewed and evaluated by our Community Grants Advisory Committee in November and grants finalists will be notified in December 2011. Links to download submission materials are below. Have you heard about the Stonewall Professional Alliance?
In September, Stonewall officially launched the Stonewall Professional Alliance (SPA). SPA is designed to inspire and empower LGBTQ professionals and their allies (35 and over) to give more and do more for the LGBTQ community in New York City. Functioning as a giving circle and a grantmaking body, SPA members make monthly contributions of $50 to Stonewall, 25% of which is pooled annually and distributed as grants to LGBTQ organizations by the SPA membership. (The remaining 75% will be designated to Stonewall for its grants cycle). In addition to selecting these grantees, SPA members also get the chance to leverage their "knowledge capital" to help groups in need of pro bono technical assistance. As Mai Nguyen, a member of the SPA leadership council explains, "Everyone needs a SPA treatment once in a while!"
One benefit of giving circles is their ability to bring people together in support of a singular cause. Since SPA members are encouraged to network while sharing their talent and time, they are able to make meaningful connections with larger segments of the public that share their interests and values.
SPA is a perfect compliment to Stonewall's existing giving circle, Stonewall Quarter Share, that focuses getting on young professionals under 35 introduced to philanthropy.
