Why Gene & John Thought of Stonewall When They Planned Their Estates
Gene Silbert and John Kiley met in New York City in the spring of 1953, and have been together ever since. One thing they've always done is make sure they give back to their community.
In 2002, at the Gay Games VI in Sydney, they launched the Gene & John Athletic Fund of Stonewall. Via this fund at the Stonewall Community Foundation, they've been able to award significant scholarships to LGBTQ student athletes totaling over $30,000.
Both in their lifetime and beyond, Gene and John have said they hope "to give back to the LGBT athletic community that has been so supportive and inspiring to us." When asked why they would name Stonewall as a beneficiary in their wills, they commented, "we've had a good experience with Stonewall. It's the appropriate organization to fulfill our philanthropic goals."
With Stonewall Community Foundation, Gene and John know they can continue to have impact on New York City's LGBTQ community even after they're gone. They know that with Stonewall, their wishes will be honored and that our community will only grow stronger.
You too can help us strengthen New York City's LGBTQ community against whatever may come our way by naming the Stonewall Community Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate plan.
