Spot light on a Stonewall Grantee:

Streetwise and Safe

Streetwise and Safe recently was awarded a Stonewall Quarter Share grant.  Streetwise and Safe "is a project by and for youth of color in New York City that shares the ins & outs, do's & don'ts, and street poli-tics of police encounters between LGBTQQ youth of color and the police."  To find out more about SAS click here.

 And the Winner is ...

BIG APPLE PERFORMING ARTS!

Stonewall proudly announces the recipient of the 2011 Allan Morrow Prize for Excellence in Board Leadership:  Big Apple Performing Arts, the umbrella organization for the Gay Men's Chorus and the Youth Pride Chorus!  Faced with financial losses that threatened to disband the Gay Men's Chorus - an iconic institution in the LGBTQ community - the Board of Big Apple Performing Arts kicked into gear to reorganize and ensure that the show will go on.   The grants panel that made the selection consisted of Kevin Krueger from the Anti-Violence Project, Ronak Kapadia from FIERCE!, and Phyllis Dicker from The LGBT Center, all Board members of past prize winners.   The $10,000 grant will be presented at the Stonewall Vision Dinner on June 15.

Speaking of Board Excellence ... OUT IN FRONT NY Graduated Its First Class

  Out In Front NY 2011

It's graduation time at Stonewall.  We congratulate the 19 amazing young LGBTQ leaders who took time out of their busy lives to successfully complete our first course on board leadership.  Funded by The Palette Fund and a number of generous individual donors, Out in Front NY promotes the leadership and imparts the knowledge needed for governing the organizations that make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ people.  The training could not have been possible without the excellent faculty Stonewall recruited from among the best of the best of our own leaders - executive directors, board members, as well as development and leadership gurus.  A complete report of the program will be posted to the website mid-summer.

Stonewall Quarter Share Grants Given To Three Groups

For the first time ever, Quarter Share membership grew large enough in 2010 to allow Stonewall's group of young philanthropists to award three grants instead of one.  The $5,000 grants went to:  New Alternatives for Homeless LGBT Youth, Streetwise and Safe, and Elder Pride.  They were presented at the annual Pointe 25 reception in April.   If you are under 35 and would like to join Quarter Share, click here!

Singing for Women

Ayana Lowe is a beautiful and passionate jazz singer who performs regularly at 55 Bar in The Village.  But on Sunday, May 15, she and her band of musicians donated their talent to raise money for Bee's Fund, a Stonewall fund that supports young women - lesbian, bisexual and transgender - who have lost their family's support because of their sexuality or gender identity.  The founders of the fund, Dava Weinstein and Dorothy Calvani, hold a regular fundraiser to build greater support for the grants they give primarily through the Ali Forney Center, Green Chimneys, Peter Ciccino Youth Project and New Alternatives for Homeless Youth.  Held at the legendary Dixon Place founded by Ellie Covan, the event was organized by a team of Out in Front participants as their special project.  The event raised more than $10,000!

The Stonewall Community Foundation is the public charity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LBGTQ) New Yorkers. We strengthen the LGBTQ community from within as we empower donors, support community leaders and develop dynamic organizations. We work to build a stronger LGBTQ New York via: inspired and thoughtful giving; leadership and community development; and legacy development through endowments, scholarships, trusts and funds. Since our founding in 1990, the Stonewall Community Foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants to more than 450 LGBT organizations. Through strategic investment, the Stonewall Community Foundation works not only to make life better for LGBTQ New Yorkers today but also promises to provide for future generations the funds necessary to deal with whatever may come our way.
