Fighting Blindness Newsletter - November 2008

Greetings!

Here at Fighting Blindness we're always amazed at people's generosity and the lengths they'll go to to support people living with sight loss.

We would like to say a huge thanks to our team of runners in the Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday. It was a massive personal achievement and will raise thousands of euros for our research projects and counselling service. You'll be pleased to hear our researchers from Waterford made it over the finish line!

The Bank Holiday was also a special time for Fighting Blindness with the first of our Light For Sight national fundraising weekends. We had collections in shopping centres all round the country and it was a great chance to tell people about our work to develop cures. We also had press articles and radio interviews nationwide to spread the word about FB. Thank you to all our volunteer collectors who gave up their time and energy and to everyone who gave their hard-earned cash.  People are still sending in the money but we'll be over the €10,000 mark which just goes to show that every coin really does count! If you didn't come across one of our bucket shakers, you can still help us bump up the figure by donating online.

We're pleased to tell you that we have some exciting developments at our Fighting Blindness Vision Research Institute so read on to find out more.

Thanks as usual for your interest and support.

Until next month,

The Fighting Blindness team
Gene Therapy Prof to join Fighting Blindness

FB Hd of Research Mike Comer, patient Steven Howarth & Prof Robin Ali

Fighting Blindness is delighted to announce that Professor Robin Ali will join the Fighting Blindness Vision Research Institute (FBVRI) as Associate Director.

Prof Ali, of University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital, is one of the world's leaders in developing gene therapy for retinal conditions. At the Fighting Blindness AGM in October he explained how he injected a replacement gene into patients with an eye condition called LCA which led to an improvement in the eyesight of one patient in particular - a young man called Steven Howarth.

Steven was also at our AGM (pictured above with FB Head of Research Prof Mike Comer, left, and Prof Robin Ali, right) to explain how the revolutionary new therapy - which is still at the early stages of development - had improved his life.

Prof Ali will be helping Fighting Blindness to establish the first dedicated Irish Vision Research Institute (which is based at DCU), and recruit high level staff to ensure its development into a world class centre for vision research.

Or take up the ultimate challenge and trek to Everest Base Camp while raising vital funds to help people with sight loss.

We still have some places left on our jungle adventure to Panama in March 2009 and we wish good luck to all our trekkers about to set off for New Zealand.
