A New Expert

We're thrilled to announce that Bryan Berryman has joined The Bicycle Wheel staff as a full-time employee.  Bryan has years of experience on his bike and in the natural foods industry, and we look forward to his long career with us.  Please stop by to say hi if you're in the area!

In this issue, we explain the differences between wheel sizes in mountain bikes, and wanted to let you know about the Topeak baby seat recall.  Also, we encourage you and your family to head outside for the 3rd Annual Jackson County Brevet ride.  A great ride for a fantastic cause.

Finally, it's springtime which means our road ride has shifted to 8:00 AM.  You can meet Bryan, see some familiar faces, and enjoy some riding to get your weekend started!

See you on the roads,

Ask the Experts

Q:  "I'm looking to get a mountain bike and do a little trail riding.  What's the deal with 29'rs?  What are their advantages over a typical 26" mountain bike wheel?"

A:  Although the 29'r size, which is essentially a "700c" road bike sized rim, has been around for many years, 29'rs have only recently taken off in popularity.  While there are some disadvantages to the larger size rim versus its smaller 26" cousin, there are far more advantages. ask_the_experts_all3

1.  Smoother Rolling - Larger rims have a shallower angle of approach over obstacles.  A shallower angle isn't as affected by bumps and dips because it bridges the gaps that form hard edges.

2.  Greater Traction - the differences between volume and shape will often create a wider contact patch on the 29'r wheel giving the rider more traction.

3.  More Stability - A typical 29'r will feel more stable than your average 26" wheel.  That's partly because the longer wheelbase and the longer back end of the 29'r makes room for the bigger wheels.  Another stability factor is that although the wheel axles are 1.5" higher on a 29'r, the rider sits lower between the wheel axles on a 29'r compared to a 26" wheel.

26 vs 29 imageSo while a big-wheeler has a higher center of gravity, with a rider on board it's actually more stable because the person's body weight is on an axis below the wheel's axis.

The disadvantage of a larger size wheel is the added weight that it brings to the table.  Also, bigger wheels and tires don't accelerate as well as smaller wheels but do carry their momentum better.

Our advice is to try both sizes before you decide on one.  We offer a large selection of 26" and 29" wheeled mountain bikes at our shop and can help you select the best one for the type of riding you are doing.

Why THIS Ride?
Aplastic Anemia is a rare/deadly bone marrow disease, which receives almost no funding for research.  Because of this, the treatment has not changed since 1986.  With modern medical advancements, this is unacceptable.

"This disease could take my wife Kelly at any time;  I can't sit around and let that happen; I need your help to change this...not just for Kelly...but for everyone fighting this disease.  THIS IS WHY...  This is not just another charity ride; it's personal."

Welcome Bryan Berryman to The Bicycle Wheel!
berryman
Bryan comes to us after spending over 10 years in the natural foods industry, with experience in purchasing and, most recently, store management.

He started commuting to work a few years back which led him to spending a lot of time in and around The Wheel soaking up information.  He spent so much time there, Scott and Amos decided to put him to work, even though it would require them breaking their long-standing policy of not hiring anyone taller than 5'5".

You can find Bryan riding in Atlanta on his single speed, putting in miles around Cumming and, of course, leading our group ride every Saturday morning from the shop.  Stop by and meet the newest full-time addition to The Wheel family!

Join us for our 8:00AM Saturday morning

group ride!

You must have a road bike to participate and be able to ride 25 miles comfortably.  The ride is a no-drop ride with a ride leader and there are several regrouping points along the course to keep the pack together.

~ Average pace is 15-17 mph ~

If the weather is inclement, there will be no ride.  We will notify everyone via Facebook and Twitter, so be sure to check there first before you drive to the store.
