The Bicycle Wheel is a proud sponsor of the Peachtree Corners Swim & Racquet Club Kids' Triathlon!
Join us Saturday, August 15th, 2009, for the Peachtree Corners Swim & Racquet Club Kids' Triathlon. The Bicycle Wheel has been involved with the PCS&R Triathlon since its inception and we are looking forward to another great event this year. We will have our tent set up to air up tires and perform minor adjustments before the start.
This is an entry-level triathlon for kids ages 7-15. Participants can enter as individuals or as a team of 2 or 3 children.
DISTANCE: Children ages 7-10 will swim 100 yards (4 laps), bike 3 miles (2 neighborhood loops) and run 0.75 miles.
Children ages 11-15 will swim 200 yards (8 laps), bike 6 miles (4 neighborhood loops) and run 1.5 miles.
COURSE: The race begins at the PCS&R pool. The transition area will be in the club's parking lot. The bike course is a 1.5 mile loop on Jones Bridge Circle and Fitzpatrick Way. The run course goes along Jones Bridge Circle into the Simpsonwood Conference Center. This is an out and back course.
VOLUNTEERS: The directors will need lots of volunteers to put on a fun and safe race! All kids who race need at least one parent to volunteer with the race. We encourage teenagers to volunteer as a great way to earn community service hours. Please contact one of the race directors to find out more details - hope to see you there! RACE DIRECTORS:

Your First Triathlon
So, you're thinking about doing your first triathlon? A lot of folks hear the word and immediately think of grueling all-day events like the Hawaii Ironman. The fact is, triathlons can vary in distance from short "sprint" events that take no more than a couple of hours to long endurance contests. In recent years, there has been an explosion in the number of events popping up as beginner athletes try their hand at the sport of triathlon. Most triathlons follow a swim/bike/run format and begin with a lake or ocean swim. This is followed up by a biking leg. Finally, competitors complete a run to wrap up the event. You can start planning now to enter your first triathlon, and here is a quick introduction to this popular sport: Swim. Swimming is perhaps the most intimidating event for most people. Unless you swam in high school or college, the thought of swimming competitively is very unnerving to some folks. You can ease some of your initial anxieties by practicing in your neighborhood or local pool.
After you do some initial training in a pool, you would greatly benefit from swimming in open water at least once before your event. Many triathlons are held in lakes and the difference between swimming in a temperature-controlled pool with straight lane lines and swimming in open water where you have to look up occasionally to check your direction requires some level of adjustment.
Bike. The Bicycle Wheel can definitely assist you with this part of your race. In early spring, we hear questions about getting a "triathlon bike". While triathlon-specific bikes indeed exist, you may not need this level of equipment. If you just want to dip your toe in the multi-sport waters, it's not necessary. You can do a sprint or beginner level triathlon on any bike. Even an old mountain bike will do the trick. If you decide that triathlons are definitely in your future, then invest the money in a super lightweight racing bike. In addition to your bike, you'll need a helmet or you won't be allowed to race. And bring a water bottle to hydrate during your event. Run. Running has the advantage of needing very little equipment. All you need to train is a solid pair of running shoes. In order to prepare for your first event, it is a good idea to practice running after you ride your bike. Running with fresh legs and running after you've ridden your bike hard are two very different feelings. Practice a few "brick" workouts - riding intensely for 10 minutes or so then running hard for a few minutes afterwards. Your legs will appreciate your prep work to ease the transition from biking to running.
